It's those Damn Haitians and their damn Datura Inoxia! Otherwise known as Devil's Weed.

I got curious about zombies in my early teen years and found out the legend arose from Haiti.
After reading accounts from explorers there were stories of men ariving on sugar plantations, watching entranced deathlike men working the fields. After they were done they were rounded up and put inside tin sheds like obedient walking dead slaves. Ironically apparently sugar being ingested was the cure for these men to wake up and run back to their families who already held funerals for them.

Datura is a concentrated powder that these days is used on wondering tourists in stripclubs and other such establishments to put them into a state of complete control. Many men are succumed into consuming this drug and being led by gangs to ATMs and giving all their money away. Many are left severely handicapped afterwards.

Some accounts have the assailants simply blowing the powder in their victims face as they walk by. Instantly becoming slaves.
