Speculators enjoy colluding and buying up resources like oil, or even worse corn, rice and wheat. This leads to massive rises in prices in goods all over the world, famines, food riots, millions of deaths in the last decade alone. They then all sell at once while the price is high, suddenly making expensive resources worthless and creating massive, shocking economic catastrophes which then lead to collapses and borrowing from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund with stipulations such as privatizing natural resources, water supplies, post offices and crops so that shares can be bought causing the next exploitative panic.
The best solution would be to socialize vital resources as part of the commons so that everyone has their fair share and everyone profits from export and ban speculation of certain resources.
So no, oil speculators shouldn't be killed. They should be treated like organized criminals. Arrest them, seize and sell their property and resources, try them, and convict them.
Then kill them.

I would think oil speculators themselves aren't the virus, as it were, but rather a symptom of an economic model that allows personal profit to be put above common welfare.

While I don't want to deny that there could be adjustments and some middle ground. I'd still say that a system erring on the side of profit (depending on how much you want to count technical advancements as a result of it) has at least created a system that on the whole has the most significant amount of common welfare of any time period ever.
I'd like to point out that one of the only vocal senators openly fighting oil speculation RIGHT NOW is also the only admitted (and one of the tiny handful of actual) socialist in the US Congress.

Do you actually know anything about San Francisco's public transportation system, or are you just an easily amused fella?
