So I gather we agree they weren't knock outs? Good.
If you offer to shake my hand in peace, and I answer by punching you in the face, wouldn't you consider that a cheap shot? That's pretty much what happened to Surfer, except he got blasted instead of punched.
I remember reading Annihilation and IIRC it was made explicitly clear that Galactus' Heralds (Firelord, Stardust etc.) were the big guns and beyond Nova Prime in power. Not as bad as his encounter with Surfer (Norrin was just in a different tier based on what I got from that comic) but still an inferiority existed.
At the end there, Richard had a hell of a run, stockpiled some nice feats and had a lot of respect. Frankly I'd bet money on him taking Firelord but in terms of relative power it would be an underdog victory of smarts/skills trumping sheer raw power.

I respect everything that you said. However (Yeah I'm about to put on my Nova shades here) we also can't discount the fact that the Nova Force (in totality) has been shown to be a good deal superior in power to what Kril brings to the table as both Supernova and later, Richard demonstrated in direct confrontations with Firelord.
So yes, it was implicated (I believe by Starlord if I'm not mistaken) in Annihilation that the heralds were the big guns, if we look at what actually transpired on panel it paints a slightly different picture. Iirc Firelord exhausted himself in a fight with a Queen bug. Richard exhausted himself fighting Annihilus. Redshift and Stardust were "killed" by a planetary level blast. Nova survived the Galactus solar system buster. He also later survived the planetary level energies of the Galactus feeding tube situation. Now obviously the circumstances were slightly different, but the levels of power involved were not.
One more thing about what transpired in the starlost arc when Nova came into possession of the full Nova force and fought Firelord. It is very possible that the entire concept of the Nova corps, the Worldmind and the Nova force itself were revised almost entirely for Annihilation and beyond. Now, I've not read anything that explicitly suggest that this was the case, but it's certainly plausible given the seeming disparate levels of power between what Richard and Garthan Saal displayed then vs what Richard showed during his recent run. But I digress.
So yes, what you said is generally correct. However it also wouldn't be shocking if Nova let loose a massive blast that knocked Firelord out cold either.
