Exa - "Stille nú, fæste... Hwæt nemnað ðe?"
This is Rohirric, this is NOT Elvish. It translates to "Oh fast. Be quiet now, oh fast. What is your name?"
This is why in the extended version Eowyn says "His name's Brego...he was my cousin's horse."

Which leads to my next answer - Eomer gave Hasufel and Arod to Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas to bade them good fortune. Later on Aragorn and Legolas gives Hasufel and Arod back to the Rohan people, and while packing from the stables, Aragorn encounters Brego who was in a frenzy, which leads to the scene above.

Aragorn says "Let this horse be free, he has seen enough of war." (not accurate)

Later on when Aragorn is all injured and washed up by the bank, Brego comes to help him.

About Shadowfax, why he doesn't have a saddle, if I'm not rusty on my memory, I believe that Shadowfax rides to swiftly that the rider will not be uncomfortable therefore, Shadowfax doesn't need a saddle, I'm no sure if that's right.

grey horses = white with black skin

Hello,

For those of you wondering about why Shadowfax was "white" in the movie where it says "grey" in the book: in horse terminoloy, white horses with black skin are called "grey" (to differentiate from albino white fur with pink skin). Tolkein was knowledgeable about horses and used the term grey to mean exactly what you saw in the movie!

shadowfax will accept no saddle nor bridle

Tolkein describes in the book that Shadowfax will bear a person only if he wishes, and will not accept any kind of tack such as saddle or bridle. He is not a normal horse, but a sort of spirit horse who can travel faster than any mortal horse through magical means, and he is as intelligent as any of the humans or human-type characters therefore he does not need to be guided or controlled. It would be beneath him.

PS interestingly, grey horses (white with black skin) are often born black and turn grey as they gain adult coat, then get whiter as they grown to adulthood.

Hi, I'm new!

Ok, let me help you clear this out. I have dedicated alot of my time learning about the horses of LOTR. Plus, I own horses! Whoever said that Shadowfax is actually grey even though he is white is absolutely correct! Ding ding ding! We have a winner! I own a grey horse who is white. On a horse's pedigree, if it has dark skin and is not albino, it must be listed as a grey horse. My horse as a foal was solid black and is now a crisp beautiful white. Shadowfax was ridden bareback because he "accpted neither saddle nor reign" and "bore only those whom he deemed worthy." Shadowfax was the son of Feralof, one of the great Mearas stallions. Ok, now onto Brego and Hasufel! Brego only appears in the movie, and in the special addition of TTT, Aragorn meets him in the stable. He was the horse of Theoden's son and the horse refuses to be handles. Aragorn demands to Eowyn that "Release this hore! He has seen to much of war" and he speaks a few Elvish phrases to the stallion. After Aragorn was attacked by the warg, Brego comes to his aid in thanks for his deeds. He will later ride this horse in ROTK. Brego, who is bay, is not to be confused with Hasufel, who is chesnut. Hasufel was given to Aragorn by Eomer and the Rohirrium. He only rides this horse to Edoras and sometimes in between. Arod was given by Eomer to Legolas and gimli. He DID accept a saddle, but Legolas did not use one since he is an elf, and Elves are VERY good riders. Now, Hasufel was chesnut, but did not have a blaze. I hope you're not confusing him with Bill in the Fellowship who was purchased in Bree and released at the gates of Moria. Whew, I'm tired of talking. Are there any more questions, or does that cover everything?

Welcome, Ruenna smile Great text smile

But I do have a few more questions big grin

- Where did you take from that Shadowfax was a son of Félaróf? That can't really be correct as Félaróf lived several hundred years earlier, being the horse of Rohan's first king Eorl. He's the ancestor and Lord of all Mearas (and said to be related to Orome's great horse Nahar Goldenfoot), but most probably not father of them all, I think. I only know the name of Shadowfax' mother, Lightfoot.

Arent most of the phrases Rohirric? Only the stuff in the end is Sindarin, I think

I think the last point wasnt really shown that good in the film. They didnt mention anything about the elves-horses-thing which Tolkien very often says in the book
though there is a mistake in the earliest editions of LoTR where Tolkien did use the formulation "bit and rein" for Glorfindel's horse though he clearly states that Asfaloth didnt wear a bit (the phrase also occurs in the Lay of Leithian - "and horses proud with braided mane | with shining bit and silver rein | went fleeting by on moonlit night | as swallows arrow-swift in flight)

Sorry,

I'm sorry, You're right. I looked into the books a bit more and Feralof, was an ansestor of Asfaloth, but not the father. Thanks for correcting me.

Oh, one more thing,

Yes it is Rohirric, that Aragorn speaks to Brego. But I've memorized the book. Not the movie. Sorry again.
