MADE OF HONOR, by director Paul Weiland (CITY SLICKERS II), is pretty awful and awfully predictable. A complete retread from start to finish, it doesn't contain a single new idea. Worse than that, it makes its recycled humor especially unappealing through its uniformly bland presentation, including ugly, washed out cinematography.
Were it not for the movie's star, Patrick Dempsey (McDreamy from "Grey's Anatomy"), the film would have gone straight to video and would now be gathering dust in video stores throughout the land. Featuring non-stop small talk, the movie's bad dialog does have one redeeming attribute -- it is frequently mumbled in a low voice, so you'll be spared hearing many of the lines.
You, however, will not be able to escape the movie's relentlessly chirpy and loud sound track. Listening to it is like being stuck in an elevator whose music is driving you nuts.
The lead character, a rich and idle playboy named Tom (Dempsey), sticks by his stringent dating philosophy. "I don't do back-to-backs," he tells one of his many brainless blonde conquests when they wake up in bed together the next morning. Once he beds a woman, which happens every night in his Manhattan apartment, he refused to do repeats. He is so desirable that strange women at coffee shops, without being asked, had him their phone numbers. Being a good-looking and wealthy bachelor is hard. So many women; so little time.
Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), who has been Tom's best friend since college, is really the girl for him. Of course, neither Tom nor Hannah will come to this obvious realization until it is too late. Or will it be too late? What's your guess?
Until we find out whether Hannah will follow through on her upcoming marriage to Colin McMurray (Kevin McKidd with a very thick Scottish accent), we have to suffer though lots of mind-numbing dialog. And, since Hannah chooses Tom to be her maid of honor, we get to see what Dempsey would look like in a frilly, pink dress. The script also has a running joke about how Tom must be gay since he agreed to be the maid of honor, or "MOH" as his fellow bridesmaids insist on referring to his position in the wedding.
This sappy and stupid romance, about characters who feel about as real as plastic action figures, includes lots for us to ponder such as, "There's more to life than just sleeping around."
If you've already bought an advance ticket to MADE OF HONOR, try to get your money back.
MADE OF HONOR runs way too long at 1:41. It is rated PG-13 for "sexual content and language" and would be acceptable for kids around 10 and up.
The film is playing in nationwide release now in the United States. In the Silicon Valley, it is showing at the AMC theaters, the Century theaters and the Camera Cinemas.
