RATING (0 TO ****): ** 1/2
"This is one of my favorite 'Once upon a times,' but I'm not sure which time it was once upon," Winnie the Pooh explains to us in the opening to his latest picture, POOH'S HEFFALUMP MOVIE. A delightful cinematic trifle, this movie is a lushly illustrated and sweetly told tale that is aimed squarely at the ten and under set. Although there isn't a single adult joke snuck in to amuse the parents, the movie's charms are easy to savor by those way past their school-age years.
This latest Pooh adventure starts with the discovery of large, mysterious footprints in the Hundred Acre Wood. Little Roo bravely suggestions that Pooh and the rest of the gang venture into the "dangerous" Heffalump Hollow to go in search of the feared heffalumps, who are believed to be the beasts who made the large footprints.
Along the way, Roo bonds with a young Heffalump named Lumpy. Lumpy, who looks like a lavender elephant from the dream sequence in DUMBO and who speaks with an English accent, turns out to be a fun guy to hang out with. He proves especially skillful in shooting things like watermelon seeds and carrots out of his trunk.
Although the songs may not be memorable, the movie is filled with pleasant ones that help establish the peaceful mood. Adults may not laugh a lot at POOH'S HEFFALUMP MOVIE, but they'll be smiling the whole time. And, the youngsters will be thoroughly entertained.
POOH'S HEFFALUMP MOVIE runs a quick 1:08. It is rated G and would be acceptable for all ages.
My niece Liana, age 8, thought the movie was really good. She loved Lumpy, and her favorite scene was when Lumpy was hamming it up with the watermelons. Her brother William, age 10, said the film was pretty good. His favorite part was the cloud racing episode.
The film opens nationwide in the United States on Friday, February 11, 2005. In the Silicon Valley, it will be showing at the AMC theaters, the Century theaters and the Camera Cinemas.
