SUPER TROOPERS
A film review by Steve Rhodes

RATING (0 TO ****): 1/2

SUPER TROOPERS is super bad. Last week was ROLLERBALL, and this week is Jay Chandrasekhar's SUPER TROOPERS. The studios execs are scraping so far down in the bottom of the barrel that they must be getting wood splinters. Although it tries hard to be a really stupid comedy, SUPER TROOPERS manages only to be really stupid. Without a single funny moment, the movie is about as enjoyable as listening to a sadistic teacher slowly, oh so slowly, drag his fingernails across a blackboard.

The plot involves rival police agencies. The "stars" of the show are the Vermont State Troopers (Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske), led by Capt. John O'Hagan (Brian Cox). When they're not pulling stunts on hapless motorists, they like to harass the local police force, led by Chief Grady (Daniel von Bargen).

The State Troopers like to try different games each time they stop vehicles. One time they bet on how many times they can say "meow" while writing a ticket. Another time, they repeat each other's lines in order to try to confuse each other. When back at the diner, one of their favorite contests is chugalugging quart bottles of Pure Maple Syrup. Stop me when you've had enough. Oh, so you're already convinced? Gosh, I didn't even have time to tell you about the obese guy who gets his rolls of fat deloused with powered sugar or about the wild pet porker who disturbs the murder scene inside an RV.

It's still early, but SUPER TROOPERS is definitely a strong contender for the worst movie of the year.

SUPER TROOPERS runs a very long 1:40. It is rated R for "language, sexual content and drug use" and would be acceptable for most teenagers.

My son Jeffrey, almost 13, gave it just one half of a star. He found one or two things funny and that was about it.

The film opens nationwide in the United States on Friday, February 15, 2002. In the Silicon Valley, it will be showing at the AMC and the Century theaters.
