Synopsis: Twelve-year-old Ayoub, the eldest boy in a family of six orphans, has become head of his household. Living in extreme poverty in the mountains of Iranian Kurdistan, Ayoub and his siblings must find whatever work they can to afford enough food to survive. But when Ayoub's handicapped brother Madi falls ill, the family must come up with the money for an operation. Ayoub takes a dangerous job, smuggling truck tires to Iraq through the mountains, to earn some of the money and his sister agrees to marry into a family that will help pay for the operation. But when Ayoub is given a mule instead of money as payment, he must struggle to sell the animal in Iraq.
