Synopsis: In St. Petersburg, Nikolai, a young music teacher, rents a room in the apartment of Gorokhov and his family. One evening, following a long night of drunken reverie, Nikolai and Gorokhov discover a secret window in Nikolai's closet that opens to the roof. They climb out the window and descend by fire escape onto the street where they make a tour of the local bars. It is not until the next day that they realize the window opens onto the roof tops of Paris. From that moment on, the characters travel back and forth between Paris and St. Petersburg. Their commuting becomes as much motivated by greed as by seduction. Nikolai falls in love with Nicole, a Parisian taxidermist, while Gorokhov and his family become obsessed with accumulating as many western goods as possible by any means. Just when they have become comfortable with their double life and its benefits, it is discovered that the magic window will close on a specific date, a fast approaching day, and will stay closed for twenty years...
