'An Inconveniant Truth' is one of the most important documentaries to be released this year.

I'm sitting at my desk as the bright Sun glares through my study window. It is only mid-spring and already the temperatures outside are soaring to 35 degree Celsius, and noticeably missing is the Spring rain. The roses are in bloom and the first month of Summer hasn't arrived yet. Something is awry in the seasons and forecasters tell us that Australia is about to face its worse drought in recorded history.

This well presented documentary is brought across sincerely by an admirable Al Gore who has traveled to a 1000 cities world-wide carrying his message of global warming. He presents us with documented evidence that our warmer skies are a result of man made carbon emissions, driven by an exponential growth in human population and money-driven industry. This isn't a standard lecture documentary by any means. Al ties in his family experiences with his message of conservation. Like when his sister died of lung cancer, his father stopped growing tobacco; or his own life crisis when his son nearly died. Similarly, if we have knowledge that our current energy use and production was causing detriment to the environment, wouldn't we, as responsible parents, try our best to preserve the future for our children.

The data shows us that if we do not reduce our carbon emissions now by 2050, cities like Shanghai, New York and many other coastal cities would be submerged by water. And by that time, it would be too late to reverse the damage inflicted on our stratosphere. Already many famous glaciers are melting, and the Antartic ice shelves have lost 20 percent of its capacity.

There is no easy answer to solving this problem. However, Al does present us with simple ways that we can all use to reduce our energy consumption. Even if our governments refuse to make changes in their environmental policies we can start as individuals to be more responsible for the future, and hopefully this will flow on into our communities.

Sometimes, I wonder, what the world would be like today if Al Gore had been elected the President of the United States instead of George Bush. Maybe we would be living in a more peaceful world today, one that is more prepared to face the dangers of global warming. But then again life is full of maybes, and unless all of take responsibility for the world we live in NOW, the future may only be a small MAYBE.
