SimplePriest> Don’t worry. Currently I work at a TV-network, translating science into a language most people can understand.
A black hole does not PULL faster than the speed of light as such. What happens is, that we have something called escape velocity, which is the speed something needs to escape the gravitational pull of an object. Here on Earth a spaceship needs to go 11,2 km/s to get into deep space. The escape velocity depends on the mass of the object which you want to leave. A black hole is SO massive, that it’s escape velocity is GREATER than the speed of light. So nothing can leave it (black hole evaporation, for the crack-pots, is something else).
That’s probably what you had in mind.
If you turn into a photon and move at speed c, you are timeless. Photons don’t experience time as we do.
Theory for EVerything:
The big problem is gravity. By now we understand how three of the four forces of nature works in the microscopic world. That is – we’ve quantized electromagnetism, and the weak+strong nuclear forces. We haven’t figures out how gravity works on the smallest of scales yet. String theory is a candidate, but it requires a lot of extra dimensions, curled up on a microscopic scale, and it’s a massive load of calculus. It’s been worked on for years, without a shred of experimental evidence to support it. That’s my beef with it.
My own work is a new approach to quantum gravity, but it requires a long way, because it seems to be connected to... causality. That we can distinguish between now, then and what is to be. (Long story 🙂)
The latest news is, that there doesn’t seem to BE any microscopic dimensions, so perhaps string theory won’t last. My uni supervisor was one of the pioneers in the field, and he’s said, he doesn’t think it’s the answer. Neither do I.
So quantize gravity.
Navykid> If anything DID travel faster than c, we’d have seen it, because SOMETHING would. With all the giant accelerators colliding particles, someone would’ve noticed something travelling BACK in time (which speed>c would cause).
Mind explaining why string theory is crap, aside from “gibberish to explain the unexplainable”.
0 * infinity… Well. Anything divided by zero is infinite, anything divided på infinity is 0 (any mathematicans watching. I know, I know, it’s a tool for explanation).
