well, hope you don't mind if i answer instead of omega 😛

1) photons have no mass. (which is why they can move at the speed of light)
2) antiparticles have the same mass as their opposites (but the opposite charge), so they aren't relevant in this issue (i think o_O correct me if i'm wrong)
3) see 2.
4) i wouldn't mind knowing that myself 🙂
5) uhm.. you could go on an infinitely strict diet (sorry 😛)

haha...

correct! i got there 1st!!

This thread is too depressing, it is so long till revolutions
*looking on the web for a time machine*

When I speak of time, I'm speaking of the fourth dimension.
*** Who wants a ride? ***

Baryonic matter is simply ORDINARY matter, to distinguish it from dark matter (which in some therories is baryonic, too), dark energy (which is really some perculiar kind of matter misbehaving), and phantom energy, which is really just dark energy under special cicumstances. Everything you can see around you, Earth, the planets, the stars, galaxies, nebulas are made up of ordinary (baryonic) matter.
Atomic bombs are a great example of matter being converted to, among things, photons (gamma radiation). But as in case of the space-ship, no, no conversion to zero mass. But even if you could, you wouldn’t be able to move any faster. The speed of light, c, is simply the universal max speed, the top velocity.

SpikeSpiegel> I agree. But I know better.... Alas, I will have to keep myself away from this site until the 8th (when I see the movie twice, at least). I go to a military academy and can't get out until saturday. How unpatriotic is that, huh?

Omega> Oh great, someone who a) knows about physics, and b) entertains silly questions. I'll try to control myself. Eh-hmm. Having said that:
1) If a black hole pulls harder than the speed of light, and I were to head into a black hole, would I accelerate to faster than c? Ooops, never mind. Cuz time would slow down, and space would contract (or is it expand) and any light beams I see would still seem to go at c. Please correct me if I was wrong about that last part.

ok scratch that one,
new 1) So IF I could turn into a photon I would a) move at the speed at light b) not age and c) see everything else around me moving what appears to be infinetly fast (is this all right)? If this is the case then never mind. We'd definitely overshoot the movie.

2) How are we doing on that Theory of Everything? Combining all the forces? Superstring theory? We getting anywhere?

See, a black hole is why i thought photons had mass, because if they were massless, then a black hole wouldn't be able to stop them...

About superstring theory...Whats string theory? 🤨

I'll leave that one to Omega to explain, but it's pretty friggin cool stuff 😎

45 days... Almost there

Basically, string theory is crap, made up gibberish to explain the unexplainable. I will not believe it until it is a law, and then we will prove the String Theory Law in labs till we pass out. Just like chem labs or EE labs, we already know that Ohm's law works, but hey, lets try and see if it doesnt, oh wait it does, cause its a LAW. Anyways, string theory wont help us. I think the problem is, we cant travel at multiples of c, Is there any thing faster than c, I dunno, but just plain ol normal c would cause shifts in the time space equilibrium. but say we travelled at 1.5*c, then the shift would not be noticed, because the equilibrium would not understand the anomaly of speed, so in essence, if we keep talking out our butt, every night till november, string theory and time travel will actually get us there faster, whew, i said a lot of nothing, sorry for wasting your time. oh wait, thats all we have till revolutions comes out, and then what, a time machine to take us back so we can have that first experience over and over again, lol, GOD BLESS.

by the way, simple priest, your pic thing rocks, what does it mean?

navykidd> well as for your first post:

😑 ..... ok

as for the second

💃 why thank you for asking. I've been hoping someone would notice. It's Simple Priest in biblical Hebrew. And then of course it's in a matrix scheme. I kinda like it

🙄 😉 😄

Thanks Simple, it rocks like i said, and thanks for commenting on my post, if i remember correctly, you told that joe guy that all of our posts matter, im a little confused, are u tolerant of everyone or not, lol, im Just jokin, i was rambling, its part of the stress of waiting till the fifth of november, im sorry, i just cant take the pressure, oh well, "everything that has a beginning has an end"(waiting till Revolutions)

a black hole has infinite mass density, which is why even massless 'things' can't escape. so, in a way, physically speaking 0*infinity > 0, while in math 0*x=0 for any x.

o well, the omega can probably explain this better.

But 0*infinity is an indeterminate form, it could be 0, it could be 1, it could be infinity, who knows...It has to have some mass, other wise it should just fly by. Also, and correct me if i'm wrong, but if a black hole had infinite mass, then we would be dead, because the entire universe would collapse into that Black Hole...

SimplePriest> Don’t worry. Currently I work at a TV-network, translating science into a language most people can understand.

A black hole does not PULL faster than the speed of light as such. What happens is, that we have something called escape velocity, which is the speed something needs to escape the gravitational pull of an object. Here on Earth a spaceship needs to go 11,2 km/s to get into deep space. The escape velocity depends on the mass of the object which you want to leave. A black hole is SO massive, that it’s escape velocity is GREATER than the speed of light. So nothing can leave it (black hole evaporation, for the crack-pots, is something else).
That’s probably what you had in mind.
If you turn into a photon and move at speed c, you are timeless. Photons don’t experience time as we do.

Theory for EVerything:
The big problem is gravity. By now we understand how three of the four forces of nature works in the microscopic world. That is – we’ve quantized electromagnetism, and the weak+strong nuclear forces. We haven’t figures out how gravity works on the smallest of scales yet. String theory is a candidate, but it requires a lot of extra dimensions, curled up on a microscopic scale, and it’s a massive load of calculus. It’s been worked on for years, without a shred of experimental evidence to support it. That’s my beef with it.
My own work is a new approach to quantum gravity, but it requires a long way, because it seems to be connected to... causality. That we can distinguish between now, then and what is to be. (Long story 🙂)
The latest news is, that there doesn’t seem to BE any microscopic dimensions, so perhaps string theory won’t last. My uni supervisor was one of the pioneers in the field, and he’s said, he doesn’t think it’s the answer. Neither do I.
So quantize gravity.

Navykid> If anything DID travel faster than c, we’d have seen it, because SOMETHING would. With all the giant accelerators colliding particles, someone would’ve noticed something travelling BACK in time (which speed>c would cause).
Mind explaining why string theory is crap, aside from “gibberish to explain the unexplainable”.

0 * infinity… Well. Anything divided by zero is infinite, anything divided på infinity is 0 (any mathematicans watching. I know, I know, it’s a tool for explanation).

but for gravitational pull to have any affect, doesn't the object need mass? In order to over come velocity, you need mass to grab onto...or am i just totally clueless?

JediHDM> I understand your confusion. We usually see the gravitational force expressed as Newtons law for Gravitation.
But Einstein showed it wasn’t the whole truth. Massive objects curve space, just as a bowling ball do, if you put it on a mattress. Since photons travel through space, they, too are subjected to this curvature. A black hole can be thought of as a bottomless pit. The photons can’t escape, not because they have mass, but because they carry energy.
E=mc^2. But a photon also carries energy through it’s wavelength (or it’s frequency).
