I'm sure Reznor learned more about making music when he was working at a radio station and playing in multiple bands than he ever did in school. Theres more to music than knowledge of how it should be formed. Its really hard to explain.
You really don't need to explain it. It's the same with Video Production and why I quit going to school. Too much money for something that I could learn while in an actual studio. But I always wished I could have finished just to have the degree.
