A rich variety of nanostructures can be achieved through self-assembling of surfactants in the presence of oppositely charged polyions. Understanding and controlling formation of these structures provide means of tayloring micro and macroproperties of these complex fluids for use in solubilization/release of actives, rheology control, DNA compaction, template assisted materials synthesis among other important applications. This project aims at investigating different aspects of the formation of these complexes, as well as characterizing the obtained systems using techniques such as small-angle X-ray scattering, phase diagram determination, dynamic light scattering and isothermal and scanning calorimetry.
