I've had to bend the knee to these people all my life and now that I'm essentially an "old man" I'm not going to do that one more single time.

You don't have to, that is not what I'm trying to sell. I am simply saying it still has not come into reality; your mother is in denial and until she gets a reality check she will not comes to terms with it. This process could take years and until she realizes that you will never change, she will not accept you.
