Return to the Matrix
“Why?… Why did you just kill all those people?” I said trying to catch my breath.
“I had to, you wouldn’t understand…” the man said.
“But, what? Why? Well, no I don’t … I don’t under stand…” I was severely confused.
“Good, its much simpler that way,” He pointed his gun toward me.
I threw my hands in front of me, as if that would protect me, “Wait, my god, you’re going to kill me too?!”
“You’ve seen too much and know too little,” He cocked the gun.
“Wait, wait! I can learn, I may be young, but I just don’t understand why you just killed all those people?” I was begging.
“I will tell you what I can of the truth, if you accept that, you may live.”
“Okay,” I wondered what excuse he would use to justify his merciless killing.
“You’ve actually seen some of the truth,” He lowered his gun, and still spoke very confidently.
“Whoa, whoa, wait a minute. You’re talking like some guy from The Matrix?” I had seen the movie a couple of times, the idea of machines keeping us as an energy source seemed a bit ludicrous at the time.
“Yes, the movie, it seems that plan is beginning to work after all.”
“So, you’re telling me that what the movie is about … is … is real,” the way he talked it made everything fit into place.
“That’s right.”
“So, why hasn’t anyone come forward to tell those of us, who have a strong feeling about The Matrix being real, why haven’t they told us the truth?”
“None of you are ready yet. I can’t just tell you, I must show you. This next bit may be hard to take. You see I have the red pill and the blue pill. Now, the choice will not be which one, but whether you should even take it.”
“Yeah, how the hell do I know its not some drug that could kill me instantly?” I still needed some convincing.
“Exactly. All I can tell you is that you have to believe,” He sounded like Morpheus from the movie.
“Believe?! Shit, that you could kill me right now, and not even so much as having to use a gun or anything?!” I would need quite a bit more convincing.
“Please, we put that in the movie on purpose, we would hope that most everyone would understand that, if they took the red pill, it would help us locate you.”
“You mean to tell me, that the rebels were able to make a movie, without the agents or anyone knowing about it?”
“That’s right. We created it, we wrote it, like a program.”
“Oh, so how was it able to be released, like a movie?” Now I was beginning to get into what the guy was saying, that feeling scared me at first.
“That was quite tricky. Not only did we have to use a different programming code, but we had to overwrite the image code with an appearance nullifier, thereby hiding it from the other programs, but allowing all the humans within the Matrix to see it.”
“Riiight…” That was a little over my head, as I had no programming experience whatsoever, which then made me wonder, why keep me alive?
“Sorry, that was a bit much. Red or blue? What is going to be? We don’t have much time.”
Again, just like a line from the movie, he was beginning to convince me,“Alright, but I swear if I die because of this I’m gonna haunt you forever.”
“Okay.”
I took the red pill from his hand, and a few thoughts struck me.
Never take anything from a stranger, especially something like candy.
Never talk to strangers.
“Wait,” I paused.
“What’s wrong?” I couldn’t read his eyes, behind the shades.
“How do I know you’re not an agent?”
“Good,” he nods his head, “You’re actually more ready than we thought.”
“We?”
“Kevin,” he said my name as if he had known me for years, “You’ve seen the way things are in the real world from the movie, correct?”
“Yeah.”
“Its worse.”
That got my attention.
“Zion is a salvage yard, scraps of whatever we could find, we barely have enough food and water to keep everyone alive,” He sounded so believable.
“How come you’re not dressed like them?”
He grinned, “We’ve had to adjust our habits some, we thought if we dressed differently, and did things differently, you all would take notice, but…”
He stopped, as if he were trying to hear something, then his cell phone rang, he answered.
“Operator?”
I could finally see his eyes, through the small crack between the lens and his face, he looked straight into my eyes.
“Shzen. I understand,” then he jerked his head forward and to the right, “Fine. I’ll do it, but its gonna cost ya.”
He hung up and put the cell back into its hiding place, “C’mon kid, if you wish to see the truth, you will follow me.”
I nodded, I knew this had to be more than a dream.
Until I was been thrown to the next building! And I woke up.
Safe and sound on my mattress in my room, in my house, on the same street, in the same neighborhood. I got up, rubbing my eyes, and scribbled on the notepad what I could remember of the dream, I had been keeping a log for at least two weeks now. The dreams ranged from me jumping through windows, typing furiously on a keyboard, while shouting at a computer screen to talking with strangers. They were always so real, that at times, I wondered if when the dream stopped is when I was going to sleep, and I’m dreaming right now…
Then a gunshot, then another! I ran to my door, and looked downstairs, an agent! He had shot my parents! I was fully awake by now, I turned, slid my shoes on and grab my backpack, not filled with books mind you, other necessities. I could hear the agent running up the stairs as I slammed my window open, and slid down the wet roof. I heard two gunshots, one shattered glass, the other who knows. As I was on the edge of the roof, I turned and grabbed the gutter just in time. However it was only enough to break my fall so I wouldn’t crash into ground, the gutter broke and I landed on my feet. I heard another gunshot, it hit the roof, I managed to pull my backpack around enough to unzip the smallest compartment, my keys. I did all that while running to my car. Another gunshot, it burst the ground behind, thank god for keyless entries. I flung myself into my car, cranked it, and burned rubber in reverse! Then I slammed it into drive, and heard a bullet hit the back of my car! That made push the accelerator to the floor.
“Now, Kevin,” I said to myself, “Where are you going?”
