exa, can u explain the hobbit names..............i mean theres bilbo, frodo, meriadoc, pippin..........and then sam........they're all weird except for sam.
Bilbo n Frodo's name mean nothing; they may be short forms of other, high-sounding names lost during the ages.
Meriadoc means "Sea-protection" and sounds celtic; in Arthurian romance, we find three persons named Meriadoc. Merry's real hobbitish name was Kalimac, with the short form "kali" meaning "happy, joyful" or something like that; but Tolkien wantet the Hobbitnames to sound familiar, so he chosed a European name, Meriadoc, whose short form "merry" means the same.
Pippin or Peregrin is an originally latin name (it comes from "peregrinus", "foreign", dereived from "per agri" "out of the field"😉, used for someone who wanders around a lot; became old English peligrin, Modern English pilgrim.
Sam(wise) is old english samwis, "simple" or literally "half-wise".
