I do..😄

Because this had set up in an alternate reality, (a distorted timeline), there never really had any reasons or explanations of why and how Wanda and Kurt hit each other. 🙂

All we know is just Nocturne was there to prevent the death of Nightcrawler when he was killed by his own mother Mystique during a battle with the Hellfire Club. (another timeline)

Confusing?? Good. 😛

that's where the exiles timeline kicks in. nocturne is in exiles to prevent her father's death.

and true. it is confusing in the typical marvel way.

Was he a priest or wasn't he?

There is some confusion over this, whether Nightcrawler was ever a priest or not. The short answer is NO. He was never a priest. (though he believed he was for a while) He was, however, studying to become a priest. But even that is over with now.

in X-Men #100, a '6 month gap' was stated to have taken place, and in the opening pages showed a church with Kurt dressed in priestly robes. This was the first mention of his involvement with the priesthood. Up until that point, he had been a religious character but had never expressed any interest in joining the clergy. though there was one alternate future shown in Excalibur where in later life, after his wife Amanda had died, he became a priest. So, this development came as quite a shock to many readers, as there was absolutely no leadup to it.

Anyway. afterwards, he continued his studies, he initially passed up leading the X-Men (Gambit and Rogue led in light of his refusal) to devote more time to his studies. he presided over Moira MacTaggart's funeral despite not being fully ordained yet. But other than that, not much was done with it for quite some time.

Then the books were 're-vamped' and Grant Morriosn and Joe Casey took over writing duties. Joe Casey had Kurt on his team in Uncanny, acting as a sort of co-leader with Archangel. (though no official leader was ever stated) his uniform ported the priest's dog-collar, though agian, he was stated at this time to be still *studying* to be a priest. The collar was merely a way to show his vocation without having him state it every issue, quite frankly i found it to be a relief for that reason.

Then the Church of Humanity came along. Now it gets confusing

In Uncanny X-Men #400, the X-Men went to 'the Cathedral' in Montanna to rescue Stacy X, who had fallen into the hands of the Church of Humanity. Nightcrawler teleported into the heart of the Cathedral, where he encountered the Supreme Pontiff. The SP zapped him with some form of energy which i presume to be mystical in nature. While Kurt was dazed, the SP said to him "Prepare to gaze into my abyss, mutant. Prepare to surrentder to me that which you value most..." after that we saw no more, the X-Men found him unconsious on the floor, and revived him, though he had no memory of the encounter at all.

Shortly later, in the Nightcrawler Icons miniseries, he began studying under the guidance of Father Whitney out of the Chuch of Michael the Archangel in Brooklyn. he seemed like a good, if somewhat jaded, man. But he was more than he appeared.

Somewhere along the line, Kurt begins saying he's been ordained. (UXM#408) he has a run in with some more CoH guys who instead of killing him, leave him alive because the Supereme Pontiff has 'plans' for him.

Chuck Austen took over writing duties as of Uncanny #410. He decided he did not like Kurt as a priest, so went about getting him out.

Kurt begins questioning his place in the preisthood, because he got horny, basically Stacy X had made some rather obvious advances on him, and he found himself wanting to follow through with those advances, and he says as much to Whitney. That he was discovering he had the desire to be with women again and could not or was not willing to surpress it any longer. There were other issues at stake as well, Kurt was questioning the nature and benevolence of God in issue 415. He said, among other things, in a long rant atop the spires of St Patrick's Cathedral: "I have such thoughts -- feelings I can not escape -- the desires for the touch of a woman. And now another Holy War is brewing -- more fools take up weapons of murder in your name. And you allow it. perhaps even encourage it. If we take you into our hearts, does that mean fighting and killing in your name -- or not fighting and being killed in your name? Which is the right answer? And what purpose does it serve to torment your most faithful when the goal is maybe one day sitting beside you -- alone -- possibly forever apart from the ones we love and desire -- who chose wrongly or failed your uncertain tests?" etc. and he brings these concerns before Whitney. Whitney tells him to leave in not the best temper, and so that's that, he left. (UXM#416/17)

Later, when Kurt mentioned his ordination to the others, it became clear that it never actually happened, and Jean detected traces of someone tampering with his mind. They went to the Church where Kurt had been studying with Whitney and discovered mutants who had been tortured, experimetned upon and mutilated in the basement. (UXM#423) It turns out that Father Whitney is a CoH operative and they have been tampering with his mind over a long time, for some mysterious 'plan' which will be revealed in #424.

*edit* it's been revealed. here it is, in Chuck Austen's own words, cause it is confusing.

Basic premise: Father Whitney met Kurt and got the idea to use him to bring down the Catholic church. Pope of COH sponsored his research, and use of mutant 13 to mind-control Kurt into becoming pope of the catholic church. The idea being to make "Revelation" the biblical prophecy of the "End of Days," return to heaven, and return of Christ, appear to come true in order to take control of the world. Kurt ruined it by becoming horny, again. Basically, Stacy X screwed their plans by being needy.

The plan: Using Kurt and his "Image Inducer" COH would get Kurt into position as pope, either replacing the existing one, or replacing the successor. At the same time, through Catholic holy wafers, all the "righteous" would "ascend" as they do in "Left Behind." All the wafers and wine and holy water throughout the world would be tainted with a nano-tech piece of hardware that would have a cumulative effect, and have the capacity to be remotely activated, disintegrating "the faithful" and making them appear to have "ascended."

Then Kurt would be revealed as Nightcrawler, right after all the Catholics and religious "right" had disappeared in a flash of "ascension."

It's all based on religion, Revelation, and particularly, the premise of "Left Behind."

The story was to do a kind of anti-"Left Behind." The prophecies of revelation come true, all the "faithful" disappear one day in a flash (because of the holy wafers), and then the head of the church is revealed as the "anti-Christ" (who more devilish looking than Kurt?), and the "Church of Humanity" steps up and takes over, destroying mutants as the scapegoats, and the church as the primary target, all in one fell swoop.

How is Nightcrawler in the comics different from X-Men: Evolution?

The animated series, X-Men: Evolution is based on younger versions of characters from Marvel's long running X-Men comics.
To put some of the more popular characters into a high-school setting, things like the ages of characters and their relationships to each other were changed from the comics.

The comic book character, Nightcrawler is very similar to his counterpart on X-Men: Evolution with some notable differences.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Appearance
The biggest difference in how Kurt appears in the comics is his feet. His feet are smaller, not as cat-like, and he has 2 toes in the front of each foot and one toe in the back.
In the comics, Nightcrawler is older (somewhere between 25 and 30), and has a larger build. He's a world-class gymnast so he's very lean but quite muscular.
His hair is very curly and he usually wears it rather short compared to Kurt in X-Men: Evolution.
Usually, you cannot see Kurt's pupils at all, so his eyes appear to be solid yellow.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personality
Because Kurt in the comics is older, he has more confidence than in X-Men: Evolution. He is less shy, has grown comfortable with his appearance and does not usually use an image inducer (the comic book version of the "holowatch"😉 unless it is absolutely necessary.
He still acts like a comedian sometimes, but is also highly responsible and has even lead his own team. He enjoys making others laugh, but is also the mature voice of reason in many situations.
Kurt has long had a strong faith in God, and even tried a short career as a Catholic priest.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Powers

Teleportation
In the comics, Nightcrawler's teleportation is shown with a large puff of purple smoke and a "BAMF!" noise that has become his trademark.
Usually, he can only teleport a distance of about 3 miles at a time.
There is a limit to how much he can carry with him when he teleports, and there is a great strain in bringing additional people and things with him. In the comics, when people teleport with Nightcrawler, they feel sick and can even pass out. Kurt has sometimes used this to his advantage by repeatedly teleporting an enemy until that person looses consciousness.

Shadow-blending
In the comics, Kurt always appears to be in shadow even if he is actually under direct sunlight. When it is dark, Kurt blends into shadows and can almost become invisible.

Nightcrawler's Teleporting Dimension
In the past, the comics have not shown much of the dimension Kurt travels through when he teleports. The dinosaur-like creatures from the episode "Shadow Dance" have never appeared in the comics.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Origin
In the episode Shadowed Past we see that Mystique dropped baby Kurt into a river by accident while fleeing from Magneto. However in the comic, there's no indication that Magneto was involved. According to Mystique, she threw the baby Kurt down a waterfall intentionally to help her escape from an angry mob.

Nightcrawler came to join the X-Men very differently in the comics than in Evolution.
He was raised in a German circus, and grew up to be an acrobat.
Kurt left the circus as an young adult, when it was bought by a man who wanted to put Kurt in the freak show. Kurt came to a small German town where the people believed he was a demon and tried to hunt him down and kill him. They almost staked him through the heart, when Professor Xavier used his telepathy to stop them.
Xavier asked Kurt to join the X-Men and Kurt agreed in a desire to improve himself.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Relationships

Charles Xavier
Nightcrawler in the comicbooks shares a close, student/mentor relationship with Xavier much as he does in X-Men: Evolution. However, since Kurt was an adult when they met, Xavier is not as authoritative. Kurt has great gratitude and respect for the Professor and wants to make him proud, but is not as afraid of letting him down.

Wolverine
Nightcrawler and Wolverine both joined the X-Men at the same time as adults, so they do not have a relationship as student and teacher, but as equals. They became beer-drinking buddies and developed a very close friendship and mutual respect for one another. Kurt is one of the only people who can question Logan's actions without making him angry, and pretty much the only one who can make him laugh. Wolverine has even taken orders from Nightcrawler during times when Kurt was acting as team leader.

Shadowcat
In the comics, there is a larger age difference between Kurt and Kitty. Kurt was 20 when Kitty joined the team at the age of 13. Much like in the show, Kitty was put off by Kurt's appearance at first, but Kurt was only hurt in a general sense, not because he had a crush on her. Kitty eventually got over her aversion to Kurt's appearance and the two developed an almost brother/sister kind of friendship. Kurt is very protective of Kitty and calls her his "Kätzchen."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: This is for the benefit of people who have X-Men: Evolution but are not at all familiar with the comic. I will update this as further differences present themselves.

Nightcrawler's Family Tree

That Mystique... she sure does get around, doesnt she? but DAMN! that father of his is a regular MAN-SLUT! hee!

anyway. a couple notes. this tree is to show Nightcrawler's relatives, and i don't go further than that. so yes, Destiny has other children, and yes, Rogue's birth parents are known, they are not shown because they are of no relation to Nightcrawler. i'll add a little bit of text in a bit to explain the relationships a bit better.

here is the cronological series of events as we know them thus far, as relating to Kurt.

Births/adoptionsand the events that led to them:

- Mystique, while married to a german Nobleman by the name of Christian Wagner, gave birth to Kurt.

- However, he is infact the result of an extramarital affair, and Christian Wagner is NOT his biological father. Azzy also sired several other children by different women around this same time, including Abyss who is a little bit younger than Kurt, and Kiwi Black who is a bit older.

- Mystique abandoned her infant son after the townsfolk became upset over this 'demon' child.

- Margali Szardos was given Kurt, and took him in. She raised him as her own with her two children from a previous relationship(s?), Jimaine and Stefan

- Mystique, on the run after abandoning Kurt, encountered Sabretooth in the woods. He offered passage to Canada in exchange for sexual favours. She manipulated the situation so that Creed was captured, but she became pregnant with Graydon.

- Graydon was born, and she raised him until puberty. When it became clear that he was not a mutant, she abandoned him. (a little help on this one, please)

- Mystique, in a relationship with Irene Adler, Destiny, adopted Rogue and raised her as her own, but with the purpose of her adding to the ranks of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

- Mystique posed as Mallory Brickman, the wife of a senator. Together, they adopted Gloria Brickman. Wether Mystique killed the original Mallory and took her place, or this is a persona she adopted to marry into a position of power is not clear.

How Kurt learned of the relationships:

While fighting the Brotherhood for the first time, Kurt noticed Mystique looked similar to him in colouration, with blue skin and yellow eyes. He found this suspicious and commented on it, to which Mystique replied: "Ask... your mother, Margali Szardos. Who would know better than she?" implying knowlege of Kurt's adoptive parents. Had she kept tabs on him all this time? it was later confirmed in X-Men Unlimited #4 when, tricked by Graydon, Kurt and Rogue came face to face with Graydon, learning Kurt's relation to Mystique through Graydon and Raven's own words. Though both these people are not exaclty what you would call trustworthy, Graydon claimed to have supporting doccuments, and he and Mystique's stories matched when told independently, and Mystique thought she was talking to Graydon when she was infact telling her story to Kurt in disguise. In that one meeting, Kurt learned his relation to Mystique, Graydon, and Rogue.

Kurt likely is not aware of the Brickmans at all.

Kurt's AU kiddies.....

Kurt has three children that we know of that exist in alternate realities/timelines. Being the laies man he is, I'm sure there are many many more Bad elf!

Talia Josephine "T.J." Wagner:

History:

TJ hails from a universe in which Professor Xavier is dead, and her team of X men is run by a parapalegic Wolverine and her father. Nightcrawler of this universe is married to T.J.'s mother, the Scarlet Witch, and lost his eye in some epic battle. Perhaps protecting his daughter? (everybody "aww"...thats it!). TJ's X-team consists of herself, dad and Uncle Logan, obviously, as well as a young Kitty Pryde, who through some accident swapped time periods with her older counterpart from this universe (make sense??), The Pheonix Force, who now inhabits Colossus' empty shell, Armageddon, who was created through the the joining of Apocalypse and Jean Grey's DNA, and Plague, a skeletal looking being who has the ability to draw a disease from another and then "expunge" it from his own body. In an effort to take out the Legacy Virus, Plague was able to draw it into his body, but not ewpel it, so he is now a "living embodiement of the Legacy virus." (Millenial Visions, August 2000)

Currently, TJ has been plucked from her timeline and sent into Exile. She must work with the others to fix her timeline, and prevent her father's murder at the hands of her grandmother Mystique during a battle with the Hellfire Club. TJ seems to exhibit much of her father's humor and bravado, and is now one of the last remaining originals on the team. She grew close to Thunderbird, and became pregnant from him. Unfortunately, she lost him to the world rebuilding after Galactus and the Skrulls, and not soon after, "lost" the baby as well. (Check out Exiles issues 8-10, 12, and 16). She seems to be dealing well, lately, and has grown close to her teammates Morph and Sunfire.

Powers/Appearance:

TJ, being third generation, seems to have inherited a few powers/mutations, as well as develpoed her own. She inherited her father's blue complexion (whether it's fur or not, we're not really sure), as well as his unique ears, feet, hands, eyes and increased agility, though she does not have his tail. She also inherited a connection to his "Bamf" dimension. Though, this connection manifests itself as energy bolts that she pulls from said dimension. She fondly calls these "Hex Bolts" as a nod to her mother, and they appears as white rings of light at first, and then explode with a "Blamf" sound. TJ was also born with limited telepathy. Her main power, however, and the first to manifest itself, is her power to possess another being. She can do this for about twelve hours, perhaps more, but she hasn't tried for longer. Usually, this will leave the recipient unconscious for around 24 hours. This is the power that her codename "Nocturne" was based on.

Blue:

History:
Blue comes from the future timeline that Rachel Summers also calls home. She is a part of her universe's New Mutants, and the team line up consists of herself, Franklin Richards, Rachel, and Warlock. Her mother is Kurt's sister/lover Amanda Sefton.

Powers/Appearance:

Blue is a teleporter, just like dear old Dad, only she is much more powerful. She can teleport many more people/objects and doesn't need to be in contact with what she 'ports. 'Port passengers do not seem to suffer from the usual symptoms of teleportation in Blue's case, though. Her teleportation makes a PAMPH sound. Blue is blue like her father (fur?? we know not), with his yellow eyes and pointed ears, but she has normal feet and hands.

Salamander:

History:

Salamnder comes from a universe where his X men are lead by an aged Kitty Pryde and Wolverine. In his world, the Morlocks have spent year underground, awaiting thier chance to exact revenge on the humans above. When they find the opportunity, this world's X men try to fight to save the reputation of mutants. His team consists of Medea, the daughter of Storm and Gambit, who can shoot lightning at a rapid speed. Gull, the daughter of Archangel, who flies with unique wings that appear to be made of some type of light. A full grown Lockheed, who protects the youngest member, Metallique, a four year old who is obviously the daughter of Colossus. (Millenial Visions, August 2000)

Powers/Appearance:

Salamander is blue (again, we dont know about the fur). He has the same pointed ears and yellow eyes as his father, and seems to have the same three fingered hands. He also has inherited his father's tail. Salamander has the ability to tear open a portal to his Dad's "Bamf" dimension, and "spill" bursts of energy. Very similar to his AU sister's Hex Bolts .

Nightcrawler's German Translation Guide

Ever wonder what Nightcrawler was saying when he says something in German and they don't translate it? well worry not, the translation guide is here!

Common Kurtism's

Mein Gott - My God

Gott im Himmel - God in heaven

verdammt - damn

unglaublich - Unbeleivable or incredible

mein Freund - My friend (Male)

meine Freundin - My friend (female)

meine Freunde - My friends

Herr - the German equivalent of "Mr.", but can also be translated as "master", "lord" or "(the) Lord" according to context. "Mein Herr" (my (good) sir) is usually considered at least a little aggressive these days, while "Herr Professor" would be a polite way of addressing a professor, however, if the name is included, Kurt would be addressing Chuck either as "Herr Xavier" or "Professor Xavier".

Fraulein/Frau - is considered antiquated these days. In German, "Frau" (which can be translated as "Mrs.", "woman" and "lady"😉 is used for Mrs., Miss and Ms. If you address a woman in the street without knowing her name, the most frequently used address nowadays is "junge Frau" (young lady), even if the lady in question is over 60)

Guten tag/abend/nacht/morgen - good day/evening/night/morning

Auf Wiedersehen - goodbye (which more literally translated would mean "Au revoir" or "Until we meet again".)

Liebe - love

Liebchen - a term of endearment similar to sweetheart. aparently quite antiquated and no longer in common use

Liebling - sweetheart

schatz - treasure

Kätzchen - kitten (pet name for Shadowcat)

Nicht war - literally: "not true?" is used roughly where you would use "isn't it?" or "right?" in English.

Was - usually spelled 'vas' in the comics... means 'what'

Was ist das? - what is that?

Danke - thank you

ja - yes

nein - no

gut - good

sehr gut - very good

Schweinehund - plural "Schweinehunde" literally 'pig-dog'

schnell - (quick(ly), fast)

Teufel - devil

schön - beautiful

verrückt - crazy

Ach du lieber...! - "oh my dear...!" -- this is actually a broken-off sentence, you would normally expect a (masculine) noun to follow, e.g. "Schreck" or "Gott".

Jawohl - strong for "yes". Directly translated it would mean "yes right", it is also a military term. A German soldier wouldn't replie to his officer with "Ja-Yes" but only with "Jawohl".

Uncanny #407

Uncanny #407 had a LOT of untranslated German in it, and a lot of people would understandably like to know what was said... so courtesy of Peter Luzifer at X-Fan, a translation of all the German bits:

"Feuer" means "fire", it seems to be the man's stagename from when he was working in the circus

the title :
"Gläubiger, Heiler, Gefallener" = "believer, healer, (the) fallen"

Page 3 panel 5
Supreme Pontiff - "Tetuedeb netsiem ma rid saw sad." - backwards and in german.

"das was dir am meisten bedeutet" (when said forwards)
= that what means most to you

page 4
"was bitte ist ein Pontifex Maximus" - said by Feuer
= pardon, what is a Supreme Pontiff ?
(actually Feuer himself translates it the next panel)

"vas ?" (when will they learn - it is spelled Was ?) = "What ?"

"mein Gott" = my god

page 8
"Mir geth es gut, danke" (spelling error, it's "geht" ) = "I'm fine, thank you"

page 17
"Vielleicht schulde ich dir eine Erklärung" = "Perhaps I owe you an apology"

page 19
"Soll ich euch allein lassen?" = "Should I leave you alone? "

"Nein, das ist nicht nötig" = "no, that is not neccessary "

"meinen Freunde" (grammar error it's "meine Freunde"😉 = "my friends"

page 22
"Ich schätze, du hast recht" = "I guess you're right"

page 23
"Feuer, alter Freund" = "Feuer, old friend"

"lebe wohl und wurde" the last word makes no sense at all. I think they either mean

"lebe wohl und werde" - "farewell and grow / develop"

Kurt: Vas? - What?
Kurt: Verdammter Mist. (Condemned/Damned muck.) I knew I should have been more careful.

Movie (courtesey of Circus Elfe)
When Storm and Jean first encounter Nightcrawler in a church, he yells:
"Gehen Sie raus!" - Get out!
"Ich bin ein Bote des Teufels!" I am the devil's messenger!
"Ich bin die Augeburt des Bösen" I am the spawn of evil.
(then again)
"Gehen Sie raus!" "Ich bin ein Bote des Teufels" "Ich bin die Ausgeburt des Bösen"
He speaks with a rather strong accent, so the first few lines are kinda swallowed (also mixed with his BAMF) but also according to the book he says those lines.
In the novelization he adds to the 3 phrases above:
"Ich bin ein dämon" (should actually be "ich bin ein Dämon" with capitalized D) - I am a demon

Before Storm comes to talk to Nighty on the Blackbird he prays "The Hail Mary" "Ave Maria"

Amen.

The Hail Mary: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

He also says those lines when Xavier spots him on Cerebro.

When Rogue says "thanks" later. He replies with "Bitteschön" "Your welcome"

How is Nightcrawler from the Comics different from the Movie Nightcrawler?

Although the character, Nightcrawler, was adapted very closely from the original, comic book character several differences were made to make the character easier to portray on screen and to fit into the movie's storyline.

Appearance
Nightcrawler in the comics looks very much the same as he did in the movie.
The most notable difference would be his skin. The comic book Nightcrawler does not have ritualistic scars, instead he is covered with a fine, blue fur that has earned him the nickname "Fuzzy Elf."
Also his eyes are completely yellow with no visible whites or pupils.
His teeth are more human looking than in the movie, but he does have pronounced, fang-like canine teeth.
His tail is smoother with no ridges, and only a flat, triangular spade at the end.

Origin
The story of how Nightcrawler came to join the X-Men was changed from the original to fit the movie. Originally, Nightcrawler joined the X-Men at the same time as Storm and Wolverine. He was recruited by Charles Xavier who used his mental powers to stop an angry mob from killing him. He has fought as one of the X-Men for many years, and even for a time lead a separate team, Excalibur, a European version of the X-Men.

Note: This is for the benefit of people who have seen the movie(s) but are not at all familiar with the comic.

How did Nightcrawler come to be Created?

This are all from Dave Cockrum's (Nightcrawler's creator) memoirs

Long, long ago, on an island far, far away...hmmmm, that has a familiar ring, for some reason. :?

Let me introduce myself. My name is Dave Cockrum. I'm also known as Dark Bamf who, as some of you know, is only a pawn in the game of life.

Back in 1968 I was in the Navy, and stationed on the Pacific island of Guam. My first wife, Andrea, and young son, Ivan were with me. Since base housing wasn't yet available to us, we rented a rickety, tumbledown, rat-infested shack in the jungle. 'The Boonie-house', as we called it. Ultimately, Andrea got us moved to the top of the housing list by storming into the office of the Housing Officer and tossing a rat-chewed pair of Ivan's pajamas on his desk.

I have had a career of marrying feisty ladies.

Anyway--we had a lot of typhoons out there. It was seasonal, the way hurricanes are here. During one terrible storm, we rode it out in the boonie-house, with lightning, thunder, and 120 mile-an-hour winds shrieking overhead. Debris whirled through the night skies, and some of it crashed onto our corrugated tin roof.

To put it bluntly, we were scared shitless. Pardon my French.

Trying to keep our minds off the storm raging overhead, we occupied our time making up comic book characters. Frankly, I don't remember most of them. Probably they weren't too teriffic. But there was one pair of characters I remember well--the Intruder, and his demon sidekick, Nightcrawler.

The Intruder was a character like Batman or the Punisher, who relied on strength, intelligence and weaponry to combat crime. Nightcrawler was a demon--yeah, a real one--who had screwed up on a mission from Hell, and rather than go back and face punishment, he stayed on the mortal plane and hung around with the Intruder.

This Nightcrawler wasn't a nice guy. He was nasty, vicious and animalistic. He ran up and down the sides of buildigs, and bayed at the moon like the Hound of the Baskervilles. He came and went in bursts of flame and brimstone--I kept that part, later on--and he had a prehensile tail. He was a very frightening character.

Sometime before I got out of the Navy and became a comics pro, the late and legendary Jack Kirby came up with a character called simply, 'The Demon'. His demon was named Etrigan, who was tied into the Merlin legend. Well, my idea was no longer unique, so I dropped the demon aspect.

In 1973, after working for a couple of years as a background inker and assistant to several other artists, most notibly Murphy Anderson, I got a chance to draw the Legion of Superheroes. After working on it awhile, I decided I'd like to introduce a character of my own into the group. I came up with four possibilities, one of them Nightcrawler.

The Legion nightcrawler was no longer a demon, he was an alien. His name was Balshazaar. He came from another dimension, and his people were the source of lEarth's legends and mythology about demons. He kept most of the original demon's characteristics, though he wasn't quite as nasty as the original Nightcrawler. He also gained the ability to disappear in shadows.

Nightcrawler didn't make it into the Legion. Murray Boltnoff, the editor, thught he was too funny-looking.

In 1975, when I got the chance to be in on the ground floor of re-starting the comatose series X-Men, I proposed several new characters, including Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus and Thunderbird. They all made the grade, though we killed Thunderbird two issues later.

Nightcrawler, as presented in the X-Men, was a gallant swashbuckler type. All the nastiness and animalistic qualities were left behind. Kurt reveled in his uniqueness. Blue is beautiful, was his philosophy. He was handsome, strong, and chivalrous to the ladies. In fact, he liked the ladies very much. And they liked him back.

Frankly, Kurt was ME in the X-Men. He was my opportunity to vicariously live the adventures in the company of a great bunch of characters. I always figured if I was blue and athletic as hell, I'd behave just like he did. So you see why I take it personally when somebody messes with him.

I didn't approve when Chris Claremont turned him toward the religious business, but by that time I was off the book and didn't have any say any more. I hated the whole priest business, both because it offends my personal beliefs, and because storywise, it won't work. A potential priest has to spend years in a theological seminary first. When did Kurt have the opportunity? And is there anyone out there who believes the Catholic Churh would ordain someone who looks like Kurt?

I think not.

OMG Shadowy I would love you if I liked Nightcrawler!!!! 😱
Great!!

Mystique and the others:

You might wanna look at the last page because the informations I've posted are in there. I just thought you might think that nothing much is goin' on here, might slip away. (I've done my best to gather all those informations and it will be a bomb for me if no one has seen it 🙁 😮 ) LOL 😛 ..There are many infos and other unknown facts (for some at least) about Nightcrawler on the last page. 🙂

Who/What is this Azazel guy anyway?

Azazel (Uh - za (long a) zul)

Azazel is Kurt's biological father. he has the same physical characteristics as Kurt, but is red. He also has the power of teleportation, just like Kurt.

His first appearacne in the comics was Uncanny X-Men #428, where he was introduced to Mystique by her husband, Christian Wagner. Herr Azazel was stated to be ruler of an island nation off the coast of Bermuda, La Isla des Demonas. The Island of Demons, where Havok's teacher had discovered traces of an ancient mutant civilization in Uncanny #422. for all appearances, he seemed to be a suave and charming nobleman, and he managed to seduce Mystique with his charm. It was later revealed that he had the apeparance of a demon, with red skin, glowing yellow eyes and pronged tail.

in Uncanny X-Men 429, he was shown at the head of a demonic army, exiting a gate summoned by Kurt and his half brothers at the end of the issue.

According to old religious texts, Azazel is one of the chiefs of the 200 fallen angels. The name 'Azazel' may be derived from 'azaz' and 'el' meaning 'strong one of God.' It is thought that Azazel may have been derived from the Canaanite god, 'Asiz, who caused the sun to burn strongly. It has also been theorized that he has been influenced by the Egyptian god, Seth. Azazel in Christian and Jewish theology is the demon the 'scapegoat' of the Israelites. The Lord ordered his high priest, Aaron, to 'place lots upon the two goats, one marked for the Lord and the other marked for Azazel' on the Jewish Day of Atonement. The goat designated by lot for the Lord is to be used as a sin offering, while the goat designated for Azazel "shall be left standing alive before the Lord, to make expiation with it and to send it off to the wilderness for Azazel." (Lev 16:10) Most importantly, Azazel was described as the leader of the 'Watchers' (biblical Watchers, not Marvel) who educated humankind in arts that led them to sin. He introduced men to weapons, causing violence in mankind, and women to cosmetics, which encouraged deception, and enabled them to seduce angels. The angels who were on earth with Azazel, coupled with the mortal women, producing the Giants, who were described to have animal heads and other such weirdness as offspring... when God learned of this, he had the archangel Raphael bind him hand and foot and cast him into a pit where he was to remain until the day of judgement. The story goes: "the whole earth has been corrupted by [Asa'el's] teachings of his (own) actions; and write upon him all sin." . It was because of Asa'el's teachings that God sent the Flood to destroy the evil in the world including even the souls of the giants, so that all evil will be wiped away from the face of the earth.

"And Azazel taught the people (the art of) making swords and knives, and shields, and breastplates; and he showed to their chosen ones bracelets, decorations, (shadowing of the eye) with antimony, ornamentation, the beautifying of the eyelids, all kinds of precious stones, and all coloring tinctures and alchemy." - 1 (Enoch 8:1)

Azazel is also referred to as Iblis, or Eblis, a djiin or demon of Islamic lore whose name means 'Despair'. According to the legend, when God commanded the angels to worship Adam, Azazel refused, contending (in the Koran) "Why should a son of fire fall down before a son of clay?" Whereupon God cast Azazel out of Heaven and changed his name to Eblis. Eblis is the equivalent of the Christian Satan.

Whether any of these stories relate to the character currently appearing is unrevealed.

What are Nightcrawler's powers?

Nightcrawler is a mutant of many powers due to the fact that he is a second generation mutant. Here is a brief rundown of Kurt's powers:

Teleportation

Ability to stick to walls

Limited invisibility in shadows

Enhanced night vision

Enhanced agility and flexibility (there is some debate if this is due in part to his mutant physiology or strictly training, however)
Well, up above is really about all you need to know to follow the stories, but here's how each of those powers work, and thier limitations to the best of my knowledge.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Teleportation

Nightcrawler opens a portal or wormhole through a dimension adjacent to his own. Kurt passes through this dimension for a fraction of a second, and another opening is created up to 4 miles from his point of departure, Kurt travels between these two points near instantaneously. Upon his departure and arrival, a puff of smoke, flash of fire and the stench of brimstone accompanies him with a customary BAMF sound. This is atmosphere from the dimension he passes through escaping while the portal is open, and the BAMF sound is caused by the opening and closing of the portal.

On a couple of occasions, he has teleported considerably farther than his usual limitations. The most noteable examples of this are Uncanny #406/7 and Exiles #29/30. The Uncanny 'port was from just outside Paris, France to the Bavarian Alps, with the extreme fortune to land on an old friend's doorstep. In Exiles, he traveled from near Xavier's mansion to Central Park, NY. Both instances well exceeding his normal range. Can there be an explanation for these? well, sure. 😉 Both 'ports had two things in common. One, they were life or death situations that he was escaping from. In Uncanny #406, a bomb was rigged to go off in mere seconds, and he had to get away FAST, along with the unconsious Chamber. In Exiles, they were being attacked by Lobo's wolves, who had proven themselves extremely formidable foes before, and Kurt had to save Annie and the unconsious and badly wounded Carter, and get Carter to a hospital. Two, they were BLIND teleports. As in, Kurt teleported, but did not have a destination in his head when he did so. He just ported and hoped to end up somewhere. In both cases, he was extremely lucky with his destination. A bit TOO lucky for it to be mere chance, don't you think? One possible explanation presents itself immediately. In both instances, he was carrying passengers. And both times, atleast one of those passengers was a telepath. Is it possible these telepaths helped guide him to a safe location? But there are problems with this as well. As powerful as both Chamber and Carter are, they were both unconsious during transit. Would they have been able to guide his trip even unconsious? Secondly, even if they were somehow able to pick the appropriate destination from Kurt's mind, is it really within thier power to boost Kurt's range by hundreds of miles? and even if they could, these are two completely different individuals, would they both have done the EXACT same thing?

No. Perhaps there is another explanation. One we can look to the issue #428 of Uncanny for precidence for. In that issue, Kurt was hurled over a waterfall as a mere baby, and before he reached the bottom, he was teleported away. Was this Kurt's doing? Not likely. Even ignoring that mutant powers do not normally develop until puberty, it is highly unlikely that an hours old infant would have the sense of mind to teleport himself to safety. No, it was his father, Azazel, who had saved him that day. Azazel, who has the same power of teleportation as Kurt, and happens to live in the very same dimension that Kurt teleports through. Azazel NEEDS Kurt (and all of Kurt's siblings) to live. Period. These teleporting mutants are the key to him escaping back to our dimension permanently, so he will do anything in his power to save any of thier lives. Kurt did a blind teleport. ended up in the dimension he teleports through because he had no destination in mind. Azazel opens an exit elsewhere, somewhere beneficial to Kurt.

There are a few side effects to his teleportation powers. Kurt has an infallible spatial awareness to help him gauge distances with uncanny accuracy, and guide him from one location to another. Kurt is capable of carrying passengers on his travels, but the ride is not plesant for them, and effects range from feelings of nausea to being knocked unconsious depending on the distance traveled. Kurt has learned to use this side effect to his advantage, grabbing foes in battle and 'porting around with them until they are unconsious. This is unforunately a drain on him as well, making him quite weak afterwards for a short while. But the effects on the opponent usually far outweigh any temporary weakness on his part afterwards.

Limitations: Kurt can teleport up to 3 miles north to south, and 2 miles east to west or straight up under normal conditions, but has been shown to go as far as 4 miles if he pushes himself to his limits.

The ammount of additional mass he can cary with him is limited, it started out that one person strained him to his limits, but through practice he has increased the additional mass he can take with him. It is now shown usually as up to 2 average sized adults, 3 if he pushes himself to his limits.

Kurt has to know precicely where he is going before he can teleport, either by being able to see it, or knowing the location he is going to very, very well. otherwise he could cripple or kill himself. The act of teleporting automatically displaces any gasses or liquids in his immediate area, but if he were to teleport into something solid, any part of him (or something he is holding) in the area of that object would become permanently materialized/merged in that object, which could cripple or kill him.

The velocity at which he was traveling upon departure form point A will remain constant upon his arrival at point B. So he can not reduce the speed at which he is falling, for instance. He can, however, change direction. So if he were falling at a great speed, he can teleport, change directions so that he is in effect 'falling' upwards, slowing himself to a safe speed with the help of gravity.

Ability to Stick to Walls

There are 2 popular theories going about to describe this ability, tiny hooks/suction cups, or connection to the dimension he passes through.

The first explanation to come out of Marvel was tiny little suction cups on his hands and feet which allowed him to stick to surfaces, much like gecko does. Personally, this never made much sense to me since he wore gloves and boots most of the time back then. but whatever.

The second explanation to come out of Marvel was that the dimensional wormhole, opening, whatever you want to call it, which surrounds him allows him to cling to surfaces. How exactly this works is a bit... well they never really said how it works, just that the connection to this dimension allowed him to do it, end of story. Some say he is able to affect bonding of surfaces on a molecular level. Others say he shifts gravity, manipulating the portal surrounding him so that the 'down' of that dimension corresponds to whatever surface he is sticking to, so that the walls or ceiling is pulling on him.

Limitations: in Uncanny 135, Nightcrawler could not stick to a frictionless surface because 'his fingers and toes couldn't get a grip'. Seems to me Claremont was writing with the suction cups theory in mind, but this was later changed. As of right now, I don't know if the frictionless surface limitation still applies.

Limited Invisibility

Ah, the forgotten power. The invisibility power comes and goes based on Marvel editorial of the time. In the early days, Kurt was able to do it until it was decided he had too many powers, and one had to go, and the invisibility fell to the wayside. Later, it made a comeback after editors had changed, most notably in Excalibur. It appears the current editorial has decided this power is to make a comeback (again). he mentions it and uses it (tho not shown on panel) in Unlimited #49, and uses it in Uncanny #429, where it was clear he was not merely blending into deep shadows, but actually going invisible.

Just as with the wall-crawling, this has 2 explanations, one from early Marvel, one from later which connects the power to the dimension he teleports through.

The first explanation is that the colouriation of his fur is so dark that he tends to blend in with shadows, and that's that.

The second explanation is that the dimension he passes through when teleporting is always partially open, and it distorts, absorbs and/or bends light which makes it so that Kurt always appears in shadow even when in direct sunlight, and when in shadows it can allow him some degree of invisibility. This one seems to be the explanation adopted officially by Marvel, as more than once he has been shown to not merely blend into shadows but to actually become transparent.

Limitations: The degree of invisibility Kurt can acheive is directly related to how dark the shadows are. He can not go invisible at all in direct light, and can only go totally invisible in nearly complete darkness (which no one would be able to see anyway) so it is usually shown as about halfway invisible in medium-dark shadow.

Ability to See in the Dark

This was not stated as a power early on, but it makes sense and it came to be accepted as one of his powers later on. The explanation seems quite simple, his eyes are simply different than everyone elses. It's plain to see just looking at him, they are luminous yellow, sometimes even glowing. So, just like a cat or an owl's eyes, Kurt's eyes are simply better able to take in light and amplify it in low-light situations.

Limitations: While Kurt can see in very dark situations, he does need SOME light to be able to see and can not see in pitch blackness.
