Do I really need to stress the fact this isn’t a racial thing ? No ? OK, here we go…
I dislike the fact that in movies important characters of comics are turned white or black for stupid reasons like:
- they couldn’t find an actor who’s big enough, so they chose MCD in Daredevil (what a load of crap)
- the producers want to appeal to the black audience. This second reason, I can understand a bit, but I still don’t agree with it.
Let me explain: Kingpin is white, no question about it. He has a very long history, not only in Spider-Man and Daredevil, but also has many guest appearances in lots of other series. He is well known in the Marvel Universe, and has a history of his own. Turning his character for no reason at all ! into a black guy can not be excused. Notice I put the “for no reason at all” in bold, because I find that very important.
I would say 100 % the same if the Falcon was turned into a white dude, or Bishop, or Luke Cage or whoever. You don’t give Superman a long beard, you don’t change Captain America into a woman and you don’t transform Black Panther into a viking. And you do not switch race. Blade is black and he’s fine the way he is, so he stays black. Kingpin and Catwoman are white and they (should) stay white.
I agree it doesn’t affect the story, and it has no influence on their powers or personalities. But it is a matter of respect for the source and the character, nothing more.
Who cares about their race in the original comics, only idiots as far as I’m concerned. Being a Spider-Man fan, it wouldn't bother me one bit if Peter Parker would be black or yellow instead of white, I would like him as much as I do now. But when you translate these comic characters to the big screen, you should at least get their race right.
Only my opinion...
