I'm a new member, drawn in by this discussion of Tolkien and Zeppelin Lyrics and the relations. I had never made the connections until recently and it set me on a quest for more. One song that I have not seen anyone discuss is the 'Immigrant Song' To me, it seems to speak of the passage of the Noldor into Middle-Earth in exile from Valinor. The passage of the white ships through the grinding ice of the Helcaraxë. Here are the lyrics:
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.
On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.
So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.
Any Silmarillian fans here? What do you think?
Elanor
BUMP.
Ya' know, in the past, I've tended to believe that Tolkien was speaking - or, in this case, lyric-writing - from the minds of the great musical gods that were Jimmy Page, or Robert Plant, ad nauseum.
Some have said that the songs aforementioned in this thread, (like "Stairway to Heaven"😉, do not have Tolkienic relations, though, as stated in this thread, there are obvious similarities and connections.
I believe that even if it was not meant while they were writing their songs, that Tolkien was ever subliminally in their minds. Surely this is true, because songs like "Immigrant Song", and even "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp", echo ideas and images told throughout the works of Tolkien.
An interesting website devoted to this is Tolkien & Zeppelin, though the site claims that "Stairway to Heaven" had no connection to LotR.....
[theres a cool song called "the battle of evermore" by led zepplin about pelannor fields]
Not true, the song was loosly based on Scottish folklore. But there was mention of Ringwraiths riding in black.
Also the song "Ramble On" houses references to Gollum and Mordor.
Led Zeppelin is the best band to ever exist, and not because of Tolkein references.

No, it has a connection to Pelennor Fields as well.
Go here> Battle of Evermore
Scroll down a bit, and read the Author's indcations of a relation between the two....
However, it must be noted that Tolkien did include Avalon is his tales, named in Elvish Avalónë, a city of the Elves of Tol Eressëa, I do believe....
when you'd look at the second part of Stairway you could say there are a line or two in there devoted to Luthién > In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
refering to the part when Beren first lays eyes on Luthién
and further on in the song you'll stumble upon this > There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
maybe it is refering to the Noldor-exiles, who are homesick for Valinor
and last but not least a part that could be refering to Luthién with a Silmarill > There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
of course i could just be mistaken ;P
