Who came up with this idea that Qui-Gon "relaxed" Jar Jar? Jar Jar fainted because he was terrified, not because Qui-Gon did it.
The people who don't like this scene seem to be saying that it's pointless. Well it's not. Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Jar Jar had to get from Otah Gunga to Theed Palace. The underwater scene shows them doing that. Are you honestly saying that you would prefer it if they were in Otah Gunga and then it cut to them in Theed Palace? That would be so boring.
The underwater scene was harmless. It was great to look at and was something completly different to what we've seen before. How can that not be a good thing? Star Wars doesn't and shouldn't be very serious all the time.
He just said "relax2 because Jar Jar was freaking out. But Qui-Gon didn't make him faint, it was the journey.
Obi-Wans "we over did it line" has always bothered me because like most people here I don't know what he meant. I always thought he was talking about Jar Jar though. Saying that it was Jar Jar who over did it.
The technique is called "being friendly and authorative".
If you were freaking out and Qui-Gon put his hand on your shoulder and told you to relax, wouldn't you feel a lot better knowing that this great Jedi was with you and he was perfectly calm about everything that was going on. It would make me feel better. It wasn't a Jedi trick it was just Qui-Gon being this strong and powerfull Jedi.
And when he said that it did calm Jar Jar down and then he felt ill and said "oh boy". And Obi-Wan then said "he over did it" about Jar Jar I think.
Yup, I agree with Ush on this one. It IS pretty obvious even from the scene. IMHO OC.
And seeing the entire journey of someone going from A to B isn't very necessary. Just seeing them leave and arrive says exactly the same thing. All that "going" has a term in film making: shoeleather. This scene is just a very expensive and somehwat exciting shoe leather, but still shoe leather. Therefore redundant.
