i also dont care for the majority of burton movies. he tries way to hard, usually failing at what he's trying to acomplish.
Not at all dude. You can't try and be good and be good. You're just good. He doesn't make his movies how they are to try and be anything. It's just the way he sees them and wants them to be. A good director sets the setting and mood of a movie but how he shows it, and thats exactly what tim burton does. Notice how Sleepy Hollow is kind of dark on the screen. That's because it has a scary, sad tone to it (and because they partially expose it to light). And Edward ScissorHands, everyone is very colorful except for Edward and the mansion where he lives, to contrast the lives and personalities of Edward and everyone else

FYI, Tim Burton didn't direct or write that movie. He only inspired it by a poem he wrote called "The Nightmare before Christmas". He also drew the characters. But still, how could you not like that movie, or any of Burton's movies? They're all awesome! And the worst movie I ever saw was The Next Best Thing
I agree Burton is one of my favorite directors. If he only had Frank Miller working with him when he made Batman that movie would have been even better.

Yeah Burton usually uses exaggerated lighting to convey moods.
