AOTC SPECULATION: R2-D2 Saves the day (SPOILERS)

In the Forums, we had this thread started by Tex on the lack of interaction of C-3PO and R2-D2 in TPM and a hope that they can do more in AOTC.

Well, it seems that this may well be the case. Last night I spent a good number of emails thrashing through this theory with Mr.BoxOffice from ThePrequels.Com and we ended up with the following theory.

We know that Ki-Adi Mundi and Plo Koon lead as small team (them plus 6 others) to infiltrate two Droid Control Ships that have landed on Geonosis. Their aim being to knock out the battle droids and end the battle that is raging between the Jedi and the Battle Droid forces. Ultimately they will fail; when they destroy what they believe are the controls nothing happens. Mace Windu and Jango Fett are also in a one on one battle. At some point in the proceedings the Clone troopers arrive at the Arena and join the battle.

With me so far? Good! OK, so R2-D2 and C-3PO have been taken to Geonosis by Anakin and Padmé, but have been left alone on the ship whilst the humans try to find Dooku. (reminiscent of them being left alone on the Death Star in ANH).
R2-D2 decides he doesn't want to stay put (does he ever!!!) and, despite protests from Threepio, the two enter the Battle Droid Assembly Complex. They get separated and go in different directions.

Threepio runs into some battle droids, but is rescued by R2-D2 (hmmmmm??), it is at this point that Threepio may actually pick up a blaster and fire it at a battle droid.

All of the above has been around for a while, but here is where it gets interesting.

We have our two droids wandering around the Battle Droid Assembly Complex, but to what end? The rumour from Mr.BoxOffice is that R2-D2 will shut down the main control system for the battle droids from within the complex. This scene would be similar in construct to the scene in The Empire Strikes Back where R2 reactivates the Millennium Falcons hyperdrive, with less rollercoaster style results though.

Initially this sounded good, but then it occurred to me that having the droids simply shut down the Battle Droids would negate the involvement of the Clone Troopers to a great extent. So I have come up with the an altered theory, that does fit the facts better.
As the Arena Battle rages on between the Clones & Jedi and the Droid Forces, it becomes a stalemate. As fast as the droids are destroyed, they are replaced by thousands more being churned out of the factory. R2-D2 know this.

So, rather than deactivating the droids, R2-D2 deactivates the manufacturing mechanisms that are replenishing the Battle Droid forces. Without the re-enforcement of their troops, the Battle Droids end up on the defensive and the tide of the battle is turn. The Clone troops and Jedi are able to vanquish the remaining Battle Droids, though a great many Jedi and Clones are killed in the process.

Right now this is about 50% factual / 50% supposition.

Well, it sounds like a good theory..I do agree with you that R2 deactivating the whole droid forces would be waaaaaaaaaaaaay too simple and too much like TPM. Hopefully GL wouldn't go with something that lame. The only think that I can think is wouldn't R2 have to do something more than just deactivate the manufacturers?..He'd have to do some damage to them..otherwise they could be reset...unless of course he baracaded himself off with them and kept anyone from resetting them..I guess that could happen 😂

I like the theory you came up with, it is very good.

Maybe Lucas will surprise us and come up with something totally different than what is being speculated. He could make us believe something and then show us another thing altogether.

As it stands now, I think the plot is probably about 55% out there. All the key elements are coming together.

R2 and C-3PO back together, saving the day? It brings a tear to me little eye! How wonderful!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I'm still thrashing through the details on this on. Rather a lot to go through though... 😉

.

Sounds good, and I think R2 would have to do more than he did reactivating the Falcon or shutting off the trash compactor on the DS. And Lucas has said R2 does more - and different things - in AOTC than we are used to.

I'd like to see him pilot a ship alone, that might be cool. Flying into the factory in a fighter with no pilot (or maybe just a panicing 3PO) in a 'droids only' trench-run might work? Maybe the only way to break the droid factory defenses is to send in a lone droid...

Good theory though, Ratcat. 🙂

Lucas always has to surprise us, so Episode II will probably just by Anakin watching paint dry for two hours.

Then Jar Jar falls on his head and says "uh-oh!"

Not holding much hope out for Episode-II then?

No no no

I'm very optimistic that Lucas will make a good Episode II. I'm just being a smart arse. Frankly, I don't care if it's any good or not, I'll probably like it anyway.
