winged steeds are fater, and if your taking over earth you want it to be easy dont you, its not like sauron sat there going, "hmm i think il put my main weapons in danger" and on horses they would fall off if hit in chest with sword or something, and thousands of men stabbing you in the head while your on the floor would do SOME damage

Unlike the other horses like Shadowfax which doesn't have crap.

armour especailly nazgul armour would slow them down alot, just imagine if they had been on winged steeds since the beginning, chasing arwen "if you want him come and clain him, and i will slyly set rivers onto you" *they fly over the waves* "damn it those winged steeds are sooo cool, whoops you killed me in an instant and took frodo"
