the cool thing about x-men is that, whatever discriminated against group you may be a part of, you can find a bit of yourself in the x-men somewhere.
So I think it reflects both the sexual preference, the racial element, even the "hey you're a big geek & we're going to pick on you without mercy" side of things.
that's always been a big factor for me, they're different, & we get to see how they deal with it
