I think you are confusing crackers with hackers.
There is nothing wrong with being a hacker i.e. writing code and figuring how things work, I do that quite a lot here - as in I create a lot of hacks for this board (like the Photo Viewer).
Crackers on the other hand are a pain in the @$$. Usually there are some script kiddies that actually don't know how computers/networks work and can only do what do they do because they were lucky enough to download a program made by a "proper" cracker.

The guy is looking at jail time if he gets caught. I'd stay well clear of him.
