The pix nazguly posted are I think done by Tad Nasmith, mine is by John Howe, and, yes, they are sometimes used as cover illustrations... Fingolfin's Challenge for example it the cover of The Lays Of Beleriand...
All these artists published loads of Tolkien arts, mostly seen for example in calendars or online
