Jack, Will, and Elizabeth all sit around a small table. They each have a mug if rum, and they’re all laughing and talking happily. All traces of fear and worry are gone from Jack.
“so then,” says Jack. “I walked right into the man’s house through the front door. The guy himself is standing there pointing his gun at me, shaking cause I killed all his guards. I walked right up to him and took the gun right out of his hand and smashed it onto the floor. He went running for all his treasure and dumped it all at me feet. Easiest raid I ever had.”
Will and Elizabeth laugh. Then Jack launches off into hilarious story about another of his adventures (can’t think of one). Suddenly, there is a knock at the door.
“who is it?” asks Jack too loudly (he’s drunk).
“Gibbs, sir. We’ve spotted something off to the south. Looks like a ship, sir.”
“a ship?”
“yessir.”
“stay here,” says Jack to Will and Elizabeth. He rises and walks/wobbles across the room and opens the door. Gibbs stands there looking grim.
“what’s all this about a ship?”
“a black ship off to the stern.”
“indeed?” Jack becomes serious.
“is it that Devil’s Throat you were talking about?” asks Elizabeth, jumping out of her chair and hurrying to Jack’s side.
“shh!” hisses Jack/
“what’s this about a devil’s throat?” asks Will.
“it’s a ship,” says Eizabeth. “Jack thinks its following us.”
“me,” says Jack. “it’s following me.”
“are you sure?”
“mr. Gibbs thinks he’s seen it!”
“well, you’d best look,” says Elizabeth wisely.
“right,” says Jack. He steps out of the cabin and walks over to the stern of the ship. There’s a pirate standing there, Mr. Cotton, holding a telescope in his hand. He hands it to Jack as he approached. Jack lifts the telescope to his eye and then lowers it quickly.
“he’s right,” says Jack. “the Throat is following us. It’s found me again.”
*next morning*
“I will not be dropped off on some little island like a useless captive!” Will shouts. “I can help you! If this is the most feared pirate in the world or whatever, than you can’t defeat him by yourself!”
“no!” says Jack. “I’m not trying to defeat him. I’ve got to find a new place to hid. Hide the Pearl. Hide me crew and meself.”
“Hide?” exclaims Will. “Jack, you’re a pirate!”
“yes, and, being a pirate, I know what I’m up against, savvy?”
“you can’t hide your whole life!”
“what do you think I’ve been doing for seven years?”
“you’ve got to fight!”
“what about Elizabeth, hmm?” Jack knows he’s struck a nerve.
“what do you propose then?”
“you and your bonny lass go to the island and stay there. It is inhabited, there’s a village and such, so you’ll be well provided for. None of this running off. I go, hide the Pearl, leave it with a friend of mine, commandeer a new ship, and come back and pick you up and take you back to Port Royale.”
“I still think it’s a coward’s way out.”
Jack sighs and turns away, looking off in the horizon where a black spec is just visible.
Will and Elizabeth sit in a lifeboat along wit ha small sack of their belongings, such as spare clothes and Elizabeth’s nightdress. Will rows to shore. They both look glum. The Black Pearl’s sails are raised and full, and the Pearl is sailing off. Jack stands at the rail, waving his hat and grinning. Sadly, Will and Elizabeth wave back.
“why did you agree to this?” asks Elizabeth, looking in contempt at the island before them.
“he is determined to flee. And I wanted to protect you, in case something happened. There’s a village here. We’ll be fine.”
“that’s the problem,” mutters Elizabeth.
Jack and Mr. Gibbs stand at the rail. Jack looks happy.
“aye,” he says. “it’ll be good to get back to Tortuga.”
“and you’ll be safe there?” asks Gibbs.
“Nah. Tortuga’s not safe. But I can hold me own there.”
“I meant from the Devil.”
“hm?” says Jack. “the Devil won’t follow me there. He never does. He knows he’d be outnumbered.” Jack smiles.
“Rum?” he asks, holding up a bottle.
Will and Elizabeth are walking up to a little house towards the middle of the island. There is a whole village of little shacks, surrounded by palm trees, typical tropical island village. Will and Liz are walking up to the closest hut. There is no door, only a long piece of cloth stretching down from the opening. Will and Liz glance at each other and then at the door. They stand there for a minute. Then Elizabeth calls tentatively, “Hello?” no one answers. “Hello?” calls Will. They hear a loud snorting and jump back in surprise. Elizabeth calls again. “is anyone in there?” there’s a grunt and a growling sound. Elizabeth glances at Will, clearly frightened.
“what do you suppose is in there?” she asks.
“I don’t know.” He walks cautiously to the door and grabs the piece of cloth. Slowly he lifts it, letting light into the dark cabin. There is a loud roar, and Will drops the cloth and jumps back.
:maybe we should move to the next house?” asks Will.
“well’” says Elizabeth. “I’d personally like to know what kind of island Jack Sparrow’s left us on.” With a determined look on her face, she marches up to the opening, and lifts the flap. There is a ferocious growling, but Elizabeth takes a deep breath and goes inside. Looking shocked and frightened as more grunting follows, Will rushes into the hut. Elizabeth is laughing. Will looks down and sees a fat , dirty man dressed in very ragged clothing lying on the ground, snoring loudly. He begins to laugh too. The man gives a loud snort and wakes himself up. he opens an eye and peers up.
“whoa, who are ya people?!” he asks in bewildered fear. He springs to his feet, a small knife drawn. Elizabeth steps back.
“no need for that,” says Will. We’ve been abandoned on this island. We need a place to stay.”
“we’re sorry we’ve woken you,” says Elizabeth, forcing a smile. Reluctantly, the man puts his knife away.
“who are you?” he asks again suspiciously.
“I’m Elizabeth and this is my husband Will,” says Elizabeth proudly. “and like Will says, we’ve been abandoned. We were taken prisoners by some pirates, but they couldn’t keep us, so they put us in a lifeboat and sent us out to sea. We had food and water, but we’ve been days without sight of land.”
Will glances at Liz in a kind of shock, wondering how she can make up so much stuff so quickly.
“well,” says the man, “I’m Been. Governor of this island.” He announces proudly. Will and Elizabeth glance at each other and Liz smiles a little bit but tries to hold it back.
“well, Governor,” she says. “do you have any place we could stay?”
“why,” says the governor, becoming a suddenly cheerful, hospitable man, “you could stay with me!” Will opens his mouth to protest, but Elizabeth quickly says, “Thank you so much sir!”
It is night. Again you see a hand on a rail, that same rough hand that belongs to the Devil. The camera movies back, and you see the profile of the pirate, but his three cornered hat is pulled low over his eyes. He wears the same long cloak. Beside him stands his first mate, Gimmington. The hand leaves the rail, stretches out towards Gimminton. Gimmington places a telescope in the Devil’s hand. The Devil opens the spyglass and lifts it to his eye. You can’t see the eye because its on the other side of his face, the right side, away from the camera. Suddenly, he draws it away from his eye and pushes it closed with a snap.
“he’s fleeing towards Torguga,” he says in disgust. “I wish he’d turn around and face me like a man. He’s no pirate. He’s a coward.”
It is still night. You see the Pearl pulling into a large harbor full of ships of all sorts. You see grand ships, with fresh paint, large and elegant. You see a lot of small scruffy little sailboats, and one ship that is sinking into the bay. But the Black Pearl is the grandest of all this ships. Compared to all the others, it is very sleek and in very good order. Then, you see Jack standing at the bow, looking like a very grand pirate, with his raggedy clothing and his worn three-cornered hat. He has this stern, proud look on his face (like in the first one when he comes sailing into Port Royale on ths sinking sailboat.
“Lower the anchor!” he cries the ship slows. The anchor is dropped and the ship comes to a halt. Immediately, the men, each holding a little sack full of treasure (from Isle de Muerta) lower the boats and begin rowing ashore.
“captain?” asks Gibbs, hurrying up to him. “the last boat’s leaving.”
“I’m coming. Need to get me treasure.” Jack turns away from the beautiful view of the large green island that is Tortuga. He walks back to his cabin and ducks inside. He opens a trunk and rummages through it. He pulls out a large sack. Then, he kneels on the floor and pries up one of the floor boards. He scoops out a bunch of treasure and puts it into the sack. Then, he places the floorboard back, leaving most of the treasure behind. He hurries out of the cabin, closes, and locks the door behind him. “let’s go!” he says to Gibbs. “what’re you waiting for? Rum awaits!” he grins and hurries over to the last boat. He stands up as the men row the boat towards the shore. As the boat taps against the white sand, he leaps out and walks away without looking back.
As Jack walks into Tortuga’s main village, you see a sight similar to what you saw in the first movie. Drunks, guns going off, a lot of ragged, dirty people, lots of noise and drunkin laughter. Wagons trotting by in every which way. Pretty much chaos. Jack grin swidely. “if everyplace in the world were like this one,” he sighs contentedly, “no man would ever feel unwanted.” Then, we strides down the street and into a bar.
