answer: originally in the book, there was only a few inches of water on the chamber floor. (it's been a couple of years since i re-read the book!) also, the chamber was many feet high ceiling. but since the movie studio wasn't that big and had a budget, they created deeper pools of water in the chamber to creat the illusion that the chamber was bigger than you dared to know.
