WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Quote:

ëar "sea" (AYAR/AIR [gives also dat. sg. ëaren], WJ:413; see Letters:386 for etymology), pl. ëari "seas" (FS, LR:47); Eär "the Great Sea", ablative Eärello "from the Great Sea", et Eärello "out of the Great Sea" (EO). Eärë "the open sea" (SD:305). Compound ëaruilë "seaweed" (UY). Found in names like Eärendil "Sea-friend", Eärrámë "Sea-wing" (SA), Eärendur masc. name, *"Sea-servant"; in effect a variant of Eärendil (Appendix A). Eärendur was also used ="(professional) mariner" (Letters:386). Fem. name Eärwen "Sea-maiden" (Silm); Eärrámë "Sea-wing", "Wings of the Sea", name of Tuor's ship (RAM, AYAR/AIR)

Written without capital letters, it is indeed ëarendil, but as soon as the E becomes capital, the diaeresis moves to the next letter as unlike in German (where the diaeresis actually change the letter), in most languages (like also in French), additive signs over capital letters are quite uncommon
The diaeresis here simply underlines the fact that e-a has to be pronounced as two different letters (which is logical anyways), so it doesn't matter whether the dots are above e or a.
