"It's that goddamn barette, isn't it? Look, I can deal with this. Fedya said to go talk to the captain if anything went wrong," he said, heading for the bridge. When he got there, he knocked on the door, which was opened by somebody on the inside. The captain sat at a small table, drinking a cup of coffee.
The captain was a short, heavy set guy with dark hair and reading glasses. "Can I help you?", he said, recognising Derek as one of the passengers he had agreed to take along. He had a heavy accent.
"Uh... yeah... My friends... They said there was some guy here who thought they stole his pearls... Or something."
"Oh, yes, those. I said I would keep them in the safe and take them across to somebody who bought them. Where are your friends, young man?"
"I'll be right back," Derek said, running out the door and going to get Seth and Kat. "Captain wants to talk to you."
"Well, to start with," the captain said, "I think you can learn a little lesson from this. If you are in a place that you know nothing about, and you find something that looks valuable, leave it where it is." He stood up and removed the barette from Katherine's hair. "You can stay in the bridge tonight, you will be safe here. I will deal with the crew members. Where did you find this?"
