Stupid PSP tricks
The review wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t have a section showing you how to get just a little more out of your PSP, so here we’ll go over a few little tricks you may not be aware of to make your PSP experience a little bit more user friendly. The PSP is a deep system with a lot going on, and the USB connection allows you to do some things that you might not have thought of.
Since all saved game files are put on the memory stick, it’s a simple thing to share them. Just find the files and make a copy on your computer. That way you can keep all your saved games on your hard drive when not playing the game, freeing up space on your memory card. You can also e-mail saved games or profiles to your friends.
The background never changes, but the color does. On the first of each month the color will change. If you don’t like the color it’s on now simply change the date.
Nothing eats up the battery more quickly than having your WiFi always on. Be sure to set the switch (on the left side of the system) to “off” and to change the WLAN Power Save function to “On” under Power Save Settings in the Settings menu of the home screen.
If you don’t like the save icons and backgrounds for your games it’s a simple thing to switch them out. The save icons are .png files with a resolution of 144x88. Use your favorite photo program to make any picture that resolution and convert it into a .png file, and it’s a simple thing to swap them out. Simply name your file after the one you’re replacing. Simple. Same goes for the backgrounds, except they are 480X272 .png files.
If you don’t want to exit out of a game to get some basic information, just hit the “home” key. It’ll ask you if you’d like to quit the game, but it’ll also show you how much battery life you have left, the time, and you can use this screen to adjust the volume.
UMD video plays the audio at a lower setting to save battery life. If you’d like to change this, simply go to settings, Video Settings, and then UMD Video Volume and set it to +1 or +2. While this will let you hear the movies better it also runs the battery down quicker, so be aware if you need the system for a long time.
A neat little shortcut for the picture viewing software lets you zoom in and out without bringing up the menu by holding the square button and them moving the analogue stick up and down.
You don’t have to exit out of games if you need to put the system down for a few minutes. The vast majority of games will go straight into sleep mode if you turn the system off. Turning it back on lets you pick up right where you left off. Basic, but neat.
