well this is it, this is my lotr column for the papers:-
It may seem to many that “The Lord Of The Rings” is just another fantasy film worth seeing only because of its incredible reviews. However, written by an unarguably ingenious author, J.R.R. Tolkien, and recreated in director, Peter Jackson’s breath taking motion picture trilogy, “The Lord Of The Rings” tells such an elemental and touching story.
It is not as far-fetched as it may seem; Tolkien based the main elements and many of his characters on circumstances occurring in real life.
The story is set in a world created by Tolkien, called “Middle-Earth”. The title “The Lord Of The Rings” refers to the Dark Lord, Sauron, who is the creator of the One ring, which he uses to overpower the world. He literally destroys and devours all in his way to achieve his goal and reign supreme. Such a classic example, is this, of how the story relates to real life. To have great power is the ambition of the majority of us. People are forevermore seeking what they do not have, overthrowing those who oppose.
Some people also advantage the loyalty of others for their own good. Either friends or gullible seekers of power easily fall to the slyness of others, such as the story’s Saruman, who faithfully served Sauron in hope of also gaining power. Saruman met his defeat serving Sauron. This just goes to show how people you think you know can mislead you, especially for greed of power.
However, Lord Of The Rings is not only concerned with betrayal and greed; the message behind the story is to always have faith and it is brought across clearly. In the story Sauron will never accept defeat and neither will he let the One Ring, the object which will gain him power, be destroyed. Yet, clinging onto a shred of hope, two hobbits, Frodo and Samwise, are set the torturous task of destroying the Ring.
It is as, Sam says, “In the end, it’s only a passing thing. This shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines it’ll shine out the clearer… there’s some good in this world… and it’s worth fighting for…”
The friendship between Frodo and Sam is risen to such a level that neither can survive without the other. Although Frodo is appointed Ring-bearer, he would have perished long ago, if Sam had not been by his side. It is true, even the most powerful desire such friendship, for even though Frodo was falling for the power of the Ring, he knew he would need Sam until the end.
Interwoven in the story of the Ring is an exceptional love story between an immortal elf, Arwen, and a mortal, the heir of the King, Aragron. The elves must leave Middle-Earth or their immortality will fade. Arwen is forced to follow her kin and leave Middle-Earth. However, bound by faith, and her love for Aragorn, she realizes mortality is a small price to pay, compared to losing the only one she ever loved.
The Lord Of The Rings tells a moving, heroic, tale of men fighting for their lives, even though they can see no victory for themselves. Their love for their country and each other, driven by their determination to wipe the world of evil leads the people of Middle-Earth to the greatest battle of their time, depicted in Jackson’s climactic film, The Return Of The King.
The One Ring represents anything we think can attain us power. For the majority of us, the One Ring represents money, for what is power without money these days? Sauron is nothing without the Ring, for it is the thing into which he poured his life. If we look closely, most of us are in fact a lot like Sauron. What does the Ring represent to you?
🙁 😮 😮 😕 🙁 😮 it needs alot of work, i kno but i had to giv it up today
what d'ya think? plz dont comment if it's bad 🙁
Hmmmmmmm the beginning is excellent but the passage about Saruman and Sauron needs a bit editting....
I think, since you're just talking about LotR in general not just one specific film of the trilogy, you not want to just talk about Frodo and Sam, as being the two main hobbits. Merry and Pippin are also important characters.
It is as, Sam says, “In the end, it’s only a passing thing. This shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines it’ll shine out the clearer… there’s some good in this world… and it’s worth fighting for…” Is this really what Sam says...I've got to check on that, it doesn't seem to flow....
You might want to start a new subject about LotR with a new paragraph...
between an immortal elf, Arwen, and a mortal, the heir of the King, Aragron. The elves must leave Middle-Earth or their immortality will fade. Might want to mention that Arwen's an elf instead of just jumpin' onto "The Elves" some might not assume that Arwen's an elf.
Sauron is nothing without the Ring, for it is the thing into which he poured his life. Edit- for it is a thing in which he poured all his life and greed into.
Otherwise, very good article.
