It could, but has it happened yet? The mistake made is that they let a stranger to the originals direct a Vs. movie. That way the full potential of the characters never gets used, cause of a mere lack of knowledge, and misinterpretations. Furthermore, Hollywood thinks it can rely on the popularity of the characters enough to make any movie in which they appear profitable. They use that fame of icons to lure people in to seeing those movies for the easy money, instead of making the confrontation idea into something really worth to see. Which would cost to much for them of course...
AvP could have been amazing, if Ridley Scott, James Cameron, John McTiernan and Jim Thomas would have been given the proper time to come up with a story and setup. And the original effectcrews and designers were aboard.
