In the bedroom, it's just an APEX player with a Sanyo 25" that I got for $20 from my Grandfathers estate sale.
Living room, RCA 6 speaker Home Theatre. I tacked on 2 extra rear speakers on to make it a 7.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound System w/ S Cable for enhanced picture and sound. Anchoring that is my PS2, which is actually a better all around DVD player than most other in it's price range.
I'm happy with it, once I get a house, I'm upgrading though.
I know what you mean about movies that are "loud", kinda like in the Best Buy TV commercial.
