He did that intentionally as he was supposed to be someone with a fake southern accent, in fact at one point in the script Barbara mentions that he sounded briefly like he had another accent.
He is perfectly capable of doing a near-flawless Southern accent, he does it in Big Fish, which was in fact filmed immediately after Down With Love.

When i watched the Island i never noticed anything strange about his american accent.
The only American accent that i didnt like was Clive Owen's in Sin City.. i just wasnt used to that *sneer*
I didnt notice Ewan was using an American accent until i heard him say.. sumthing with the "ER" sound. My friend, i took with me, thought he sounded funny when she heared his natural accent.. what a looser. 😬

Sorry, but it is immature to go onto a thread where you know there are fans of a person and bash that person. It's something someone does merely for attention and to get reactions out of the fans on the post. I've seen it start fights on several posts when someone goes in just to start bashing the person said post is about simply in hopes of starting a fight or getting attention, if that weren't the case, then said person would not bother to check back after expressing their opinion. Sorry but seeking attention in such a way is in fact immature.
