Fermented Reptile- Lets Just Call You "Quits"

incredible. thumbup

finally listened to it

One of the most slept on albums of all-time and one of my all-time favorite albums, period. An absolute classic.

havent heard much of park like setting. better than Fermented Reptile?

In my opinion, yes. But they're different type of albums. Both dope... but I'd take Park-Like's album over Fermented's any day. John Smith and mcenroe at their best. Well, they're always at their best!

k thanks for answering question 😄

and i found this video of Ras Kass on BET 😆

No prob Hockey. Thanks for the vid!

Here's a review of both albums for a comparison:

Park-Like Setting
School Day 2, Garbage Day 4
Peanuts & Corn-2000

Park-Like Setting is Mcenroe, John Smith, and DJ Hunnicutt._ Although they've been performing together for a while now, this is their debut album._ A lot people should already be familiar with Mcenroe, or at least his great production, from his work on other peanuts & corn releases such as his own Ethics EP and his beats on the Fermented Reptile album._ John Smith is probably a new name to most though, and just to let you know right away, he is nothing short of amazing on this album._ School Day 2, Garbage Day 4 is based upon, you guessed it, a school concept._ With each track presented as one of the many courses offered._ I loved this concept right from the start and with the great beats and rhymes to back it up, this album is incredible. The School Day start's off with a short "Orientation", and continues with the first full course, "Music Appreciation"._ Both emcees speak on their disgust with certain aspects of hip-hop, including major labels and the likenesses associated with them, "I didn't buy a walkman to listen to your talkin'."_ As always, the production is great with one of Mcenroe's seemingly endless supply of dope bass lines driving the beat.

One of the best tracks ,"Francais", has Park-Like expressing their thoughts on the use of profanity laced rhymes._ Mcenroe gets the point across nicely, "if you were rated like a movie it'd be R but your music / is only appealing to pre-teens due to language you're abusing / mine is rated R for mature subject matter / ask an imbecile to rhyme, he starts with idle chatter / then sure enough starts swearing, like a sailor / talk like that, sure sign of a failure / in life, my intention is not to play censor / but advance hip-hop by making lyrics better."_ John Smith takes a bit of a different view, "whether they're quietly muttered under my breath, or get yelled / my language remains saltier than a pretzel."

"Political Science" features one of my favourite beats on the album, and provides a great commentary on the unjust world of politics._ Using the story of his own candidacy back in a junior high school election as an example, Mcenroe shows that it's not always the best man who gets the job._ As he expresses the unfair election loss to his school's popular football star, "i got straight A's, Ricky barely passed / but he's good looking, athletic, i guess i'm out-classed."

"Personal Development II" is a great little solo track from John Smith._ His vivid description of waking up with a terrible hangover is done flawlessly._ "last night light was warm, soft, and orange through my bottle / now i'm wishing that the sun would lay off the throttle / it's charging full bore through my blinds / i finds my tongue numb / i could not digest a crumb." The track comes to a close nicely with a turntable display from the song's guest, DJ Grasshopper._ John Smith has a great vocal presence and very charismatic delivery that, combined with his lyrics, will probably have you placing him near the top of your favourite emcees list after hearing this album._ His style contrasts very nicely with the more natural sounding, and great, delivery from Mcenroe.

Every track on this album is basically a highlight._ There's a wide variety of subject matter throughout, and it all manages to blend together seamlessly._ Whether it's a great narrative like "Astronomy", where Mcenroe describes his dream of wanting to work for NASA, or a dope lyrical display,_ such as on "Psychology", they all come together._ The trio of Work Experience courses are great creative examples, all very different, yet all relating to each other. Of those three, "Work Experience II" is probably my favourite, with John Smith describing his job in an adult video store, "it sucks, it's so dull, it's a mosaic of mullets / a spattering of spankers, a world of wankers / tuggin' with unblinking eyes buggin' / and sparse moustache on upper lip moist."

Throughout the albums 73min+ of hip-hop you will not find yourself reaching for the skip button once._ Even the group of bonus tracks, "Extracurricular Activities", feature great highlights including a wonderful Madonna impression from Mcenroe._ The production is consistently tight, full of dope bass lines and dusty drums, while the lyrics are both highly creative and sincere._ School Day 2, Garbage Day 4 is a very cohesive piece of work and sticks to it's creative concept perfectly._ Park-Like Setting seem to be setout to do one thing, and that is make great hip-hop.

Fermented Reptile
Let's Just Call You "Quits"
Peanuts & Corn-1999

Fermented Reptile comes straight out of Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada._ Winnipeg?? you say; Yes Winnipeg, just like the recent discovery of Halifax hip-hop, people are starting to recognize another one of Canada's talented hip-hop spots._ Maybe soon everyone will be aware it's the music that's important, and not where your from._ Fermented Reptile consists of 2 emcees, Gruf The Druid of Frek Sho and Wicked Nut, formerly of Farm Fresh._ Their producer, mcenroe, is one of the best beat makers around (he's a dope emcee to) and providing the cuts on the album is DJ Hunnicutt. Every track on "Let's Just Call You 'quits'" has a concept and this is one of, if not, the best conceptual albums of all time._ Fermented Reptile is a very political minded group, and their anti-commercialism, anti-government attitude is displayed right from the start of the album with "My Savings Account."_ Featuring one of my favourite beats on the album, as Gruff and Wicked Nut go off on our money worshipping society._ Check out these line from Wicked Nut, "gain possession of the country / it's free trade / you try living in peace on an island that slaves made / welcome to Canada!"On "Urine Sample" FR uses a more abstract approach to convey their disgust with commercial society._ This is probably the most creative song on the album, with Wicked Nut playing the role of a man so obsessed with X-mas, that he lays in his bed for weeks waiting for the big day, until he becomes too tired and miserable to even get up and take a piss, so he does his duty in a bowl!"I Finally See" has Wicked Nut telling a tale from the abstract point of view where Disney has bought out everything in the world, including some emcees._ While, "Simple Me," has him_ battling his own sexist views as he provides one of the most heartfelt and pensive tracks on the album."Accidents Happen" is a great solo track from Gruff, with him telling a story of a scientist who invents a car that runs on water, but the greedy powers that be take everything he worked for away from him._ On "Factory Emissions" Wicked Nut drops one of my favourite lines from the album, "we live in a world where 7-Eleven stays open all night / but the emergency room in my place turns out the light / at 10:00 PM / so if your heart fails, do it before then."Let's Just Call You 'quits' features 21 consistently great tracks, with mcenroe and a couple guest producers providing the perfect backdrop of grimy sounding beats mixed with dope bass-lines._ While Gruff and Wicked Nut present one of the best, and most creative, displays of conceptual lyricism i've ever heard._ Wake up to the wonderful world of Canadian hip-hop!

thanks thumbup
