Don't Spit in a Cop's Burger
AAlbuquerque - A Rio Rancho teenager was arrested for allegedly spitting into a hamburger purchased by a police officer.
It happened at a Burger King drive-through at Highway 528 and Corrales Road. The officer says he got more than he asked for with his meal.
He starts to bite into his food… and notices something wrong with his food,” said Officer John Francis of Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety.
Police say the officer opened his bun and discovered someone had spit on his burger.
Officers arrested 19-year-old Marcus Calderon and charged him with assaulting a police officer and altering food. Both are misdemeanors.
I’m referring to it nicely as spit. It was a little more than that. It’s very sickening to think about,” said Francis.
The Burger King franchise is just as upset. Though the owner and manager would not do an on-camera interview, they tell Eyewitness News 4 they have never had an incident like this before and will not tolerate such behavior.
The manager says all other employees at the restaurant are upstanding, clean and courteous.
Calderon was fired.
The teen did provide blood and saliva samples to police in order to be tested for hepatitis and HIV.
“We treat this very seriously,” said Francis. “If anyone does this to any of our officers or any members of the general public we find out about it, you will go to jail.”
Calderon remained in jail Sunday night on $2,000 bond.
The officer involved is still waiting for test results on his health.
