I saw it on Tuesday night ( which is my day off from work ) .... four of us went together to see it ... we went a bit early, ate something at a fast food joint across the road, smoked a joint and went in to see it ... and it was a great experience. The theatre was almost empty ( this is not the sort of movie that would draw in crowds in a place like this ... firstly the plot, simple enough as it is, would go over most people heads ... and even those who would understand it, its a bit too subtle for them ... out here a movie like Spiderman would fit the collective IQ better ... anyway ... ) the theatre was almost empty, so I was sitting about 4 rows from the front ... with a stupid smile on my face for the next 2 and a half hours ... I didnt budge even in the interval except to stretch my legs for a minute. From the opening shot where the camera pans upwards, we see these small moving lights on the Coruscant atmosphere ...and John Williams ethereal eerie music floods the theatre, in the cold darkness ... man this movie is like one long acid trip ( without the acid ).
I saw it again today ... I just got home from the theatre 20 minutes back ... it had much better sound than the theatre I saw it in on Tuesday. This time I was totally alone ... again it was quite empty and I was 4 rows from the front. Again, I was transported to another world, and midway through the movie, in the darkness and in the midst of John William's music, as the ship carrying Anakin and Padme arrived on Naboo .... the thought of coming back to real world was unbearable ... I was wishing I had a magic ticket like that kid in the move Last Action Hero, so that I could just jump into the screen and dissapear out of this world into that one forever.
So yes ... I loved it. I'm gonna go see it again tomorrow or day after, at an Imax theatre.
I can understand why critics, and a lot of viewers criticized it ... there were parts in which the story line and the general flow of the plot were dragging, and it could have used some editing ... having seen it on the big screen twice now, I agree with some of Queeq's observations in the Reviews thread.
The movie could have been even better, I do believe.
I'm a little short of time right now to go into details ( work beckons ), so I will get into details a little later on another post.
But the thing is ... these thoughts only happen after a couple of hours, when reality and the harsh sunlight enter my brain. Throughout the movie, and for a couple of hours afterwards, I really didnt care about any of that stuff ... I just wished I had the time to see it all over again. Even as I write this I can only think of going to see it tomorrow or day after at the IMAX theatre. The thing is, this is not a movie to be evaluated like all other movies in terms of storyline, acting and editing etc .etc. ( not that any of it was bad or anything, only some of it could have been better ).
Its a whole fantasy thing ... you walk out feeling on air, and all those things feel like details, and unimportant details at that.
So yes ... I loved it !! But having seen the lack of crowd response here, I doubt its gonna last very long in Bombay. So I'm gonna try and see it as much as I can before it ends it run ... hopefully at least twice more. As of now ... the image of Anakin's artificial arm at the end is in my mind ... man this movie is cool !
I hate reality. Reality sucks ... !!
