Nationalism

Nationalism

I hate nationalism, personally. In the case of America, it's just feebly trying to come up with half-baked defenses when some foreign country brings up our numerous faults. Because of my extremely low opinion of America, George W. Bush, and the United States Government in general, that I refuse to stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance once a week. I feel no need to pledge undying allegiance to a country I hate. And yet, as much as I hate my own country, I know that I have to deal with it for now, since I have no means of fleeing the situation, and no power to try and change it.

One of my friends has an almost irrational hatred of everything British. Granted, she is an extreme Irish nationalist (even though she's only 1/4 Irish and born in America), but every time Britain is brought up in a conversation, she scowls and denounces them. She's actually a member here, but she began boycotting it once she learned it was British-run.

Now, I know that one should feel proud of their country (except Americans), but sometimes that love can blind us to everything good about another culture that you happen to hate because of an event centuries past.

I think some sort of Nationalism is good. Pride in ones country is a good thing but too much is bad. i think its called Xenophobia i might be wrong.

Nationalism is one of the factors that leads to wars

not always...

^Indeed, not always

Sometimes is just the mix of militarism and nationalism

yea

but there are alot more factors

A xenophobe is someone who fears foreigners, not someone who loves their country. Although severe nationalism could develop into xenophobia, I guess

hmm but there was a word for extreme nationalsim...i got it mixed up with xenophobia. ill try to remember and ill post back. but i also have to do geometry homework 😂 ill be done soon

^Yes, that was what was happening in Russia
Nationalism/Xenophobia

A surge of nationalism in Russia, a kind of demented patriotism run amok, has led to a new wave of xenophobia, intolerance and violence, especially among young people. One senior government minister, blaming overheated campaign rhetoric, said Russian youth had become "ethnically phobic."

yup. 🙂

I sing the anthem every morning here (Canada) I cheer for our Olympics team and other sports teams, and I buy Canadian made goods too 🙂

I think some pride is important of your country.
However everything has limits 😄

agree

I agree with you a hundred percent. I don't say the pledge, either. I don't even stand up for it. And the funny thing is, none of my teachers complain. I used to be proud to be an American, but I've realized that Democracy really isn't all that uncommon anymore. So, when you size America up against another country, say, France (yes, I said France, somebody kill me, I must be a terrorist), we start looking pretty bad. You know they get paid maternity/paternity leave over there? And they only work four days a week? Sounds good to me.

hey you know what's funny is that in the Olympics or in other international sporting events, when it's US versus Canada I cheer for Canada 😎

Oh and another thing about France--they produce some of the best cheese and wine in the world. I wouldn't be able to live without the occasional dosage of French cheese.

after Plato, democracy was introduced and i thought it kind of worked for them...then we moved on to Julius Caesar (not a good outcome for him) and now the U.S. Pure Capitalism and Pure Democracy. at school its mandatory to stand up for the pledge but i dont actually pay attention. be right back, im hungry 🙁

My school is cool, they don't make us stand up if we don't want to 😄

Even though the principal could probably get thrown in jail if the govt. found out 😆

i disagree...no school is "cool" 😄 😂

cool to let u not stand up but no school is "cool"

like i said "no school is..."

cool

Xenophobia is a greek word, xenos=stranger and phobia, well, you know that. Nothing to do with nationalism, as stated ✅

I'm not very patriotic myself, but a you have to be at least a little bit proud of your country 😄 Not that I'd die for it or something 😐

funnily enough... we have nothing overhere to be patriotic about

flemish hate the walloons and vice verse, no one wants anything to do with our german speaking parts.... we all mock the limburgers for being stupid etc.

so, if you can have a bit of patriotism or nationalism, go ahead, some don't have it, but just don't overdo it
