When I first came to this country in 1998, I wonder what I was doing here. Of course, I was a bit too young to understand the situation, I couldn’t think of a reason for leaving my country, my friends, and everything familiar to move to a place as different as the United States of America. At the age of 14, this country seemed so intimidating; however I didn’t let that deter me. My goal was to succeed. It was a struggle for me, but also a rewarding task. The fact that I am here speaking to you now is not only the result of my efforts but also the efforts of others as well. Passages in our lives, like graduation, bring forth efforts of parents, teachers, and friends.
Last week my classmates and I were honored at the academic awards dinner given by alumni and members of the community and those who care about Union Hill students. It was an English poet, John Donne who said “No man is an island,” and classmates we must remember to always go back to thank, to give and to share with others. Never forget those who came before us to light the way and make our journey easier. There is so much greed in the world that we must remember to stay simple and humble and to always give back. Good luck and always remember it’s time for us to return the favor.
