But Thingol would not suffer Eöl to depart, unless he agree that he return to Doriath when called for counsel by the King. And that he leave a memory of himself to Thingol, something he held dear.
So it was that Eöl suffered the loss of Anglachel the Iron Flame of the Stars, which he poured much of his malice, and his hatred for the Noldor in; and then Thingol gave Eöl leave, and his servants. And Eöl returned oft thither to the King’s halls of Menegroth, though he traveled then only by night.
