Is the Living Tribunal supposed to represent God?

The Living Tribunal

allright, big big question that might stir up a lot of debate.

but i was rereading dante's inferno and got to the diagram and description of satan. with his three faces representing hate, ignorance, and impotence. looking back at the tribunal, he is an intangable, omnipotent, and just being, suspended in much the same posture with three faces of his own, representing equity, necesity, and revenge. the question i'm getting to hear is simple. does anyone else believe that the tribunal is supposed to be the marvel representation of yahweh, the god of the old testement?

no....he has already said that he answers tot he One Above All...who i assume is God...but that is a very good inquiry u've made...if anyone didnt know this about the tribunal then that would be an excellent conclusion

wouldnt god be the brother from the crossover Marvel vs DC?? thats the only one powerfull enough to tell the living tribunal wat to do in the comic world that i know of. and as far as marvel's satan, i do beleive thats mephitso.....i could very well be wrong though.

God's gift is for man to rise to equnimity with him. The living tribunal is meant to stop those who would try to prevent that for others or themselves. He doesn't change it for the peps. just stops thier possible asention.

ah, finally an answer!

no, mephisto is not the devil, he simply calls his dimension hell to fool stupid humans. the person who is the true fallen angel appears to be a new x-men villain (and nightcrawler's real father) Azazel. in Judaism, Azazel is the neutral, often evil, angel of death. not quite the morning star (lucifer) but apt for the part. The brother is the universe itself. therfore it can be explained that the tribunal creates and serves the universe. serving his creation and creations. the same can be said of the spectre, though his visual and powers are a lot less biblically spectacular.

wow, thanx for that history lesson!

Hmm, in Israeli demonology Azazel is a djinn who was cast out from Heaven for refusing to worship Adam and for lusting after mortal women.

No clue who he truly represents in the MU...and I cannot recall ever seeing Satan in the MU. I know Belasco is the ruler of Limbo (and fluck, how did I leave him off of that sorceror list); Mephisto is one of many demons; Hela the Goddess of Death in Asgard (actually Hel).

I am pretty certain that TOAA represents the highest of the high, however. I saw the closest representation of God in The Authority when Jenny Sparks killed "him."

The Spectre's powers are a sight to behold - if you mean The Spectre from the DCU.

Arachnoid, are you sure about what Satan's 3 faces represent in Dante's Inferno? Just read it again last year and cannot recall (too lazy to dig it up right now).

Stumbled upon this resource for those who find www.marveldirectory.com insufficient:

Err, i havent posted in this thread yet(Darth Jello was the one who mentioned the 3 faces), but if your asking me to look for it, here it is:

I read the Divine Comedy in History last year, and literature class freshman year, had several discussions. its a very good story. Dante was either insane or a genius.

I was under the impression that he was a djinn in traditional arab tales, the info on him being the angel of death came straight from my Rabbi. he's too often confused with Azrael/Uriel who is one of the archangels.
i'm really happy with how deep this topic has gotten. so far, (as far as I know), there have been many demonic realms in marvel, including mephisto's hell, and limbo ruled by symm, nastirh, and belasco. so far none of them have been proven to be the true hell or hades. the closest is azazel's realm, since there really are demons related to nightcrawler that were banished there after a war with angels.

wow. im wordless, in that i have no idea what you guys are saying.

Moshtitan, read up on Jewish mythology, or theology(or whatever you want to call it) and read the Divine Comedy by Dante. that should keep you busy for a year or two. while you're at it, keep an open mind and read Muslim and Christian mythology/theology.

oh, i have no problem being open minded, as i am an agnostic, but thanx for the refferal, ill be sure to check that out. i think its grand that comics tye in with religion like that.

LT

the living tribunal does not represent god, though he does have infinate powers, the supposed "one above all" the LT serves has been hinted in the comics/web 2 be either stan lee, or jack kirby which i suppose are the only beings that have the power to destroy the tribunal if you think about it
