Actually, one can be. Inu Yasha isn't, of course. But Mario is Nintendo's mascot, and Sonic is Sega's mascot, and they're both the main characters of a variety of things, from movies to comic book series.

Heh... touche... -_- I feel rather stupid now... but for something like InuYasha, I don't think InuYasha himself can actually be a mascot.
I don't think you are actually thinking of mascots, because a mascot is something that represents a group, i.e. a sports team mascot can be a tree, or a color, not necessarily an animal. Inuyasha would actually represent the anime Inuyasha, meaning he IS the mascot.
You're thinking like, main animal thingy.
In any case, I still got Alucard. alucard
