Chris Tolkien

Christopher Tolkien is the son of J.R.R Tolkien,

I was wondering if he had infact watched any of the Lord of The Rings films.

It would be highly interesting to hear what his first thoughts were on first word of hearing that the films were being made and if he decided to rebel against it summin

OR

did PJ infact have to ask permission from Chris Tolkien - I dont think he would of as Chris didnt own the book, the silmarillion on the other hand is infact his rights as he editted it...

I'm pretty sure PJ needed permission from a surviving Tolkien, so yea, he got permission from Chris.

It'd be kinda stupid for him NOT to have seen them by now 😑

thats my question, do you think he didnt want to see the film because he thought of a unique world of arda and saw the full view of what his father wanted

perhaps he didnt want to see this SFX and hi-tech "mijigees" creating all this

I betcha when he was reading the book, he thought of things dinfferently when his father was writing it. We can always ask him ourselves 😱

Of course PJ needed the permission (but rather from the Paul Zaentz Company / Tolkien Enterprises / Tolkien Estate),

And Chris DID see the films and didn't really like them. That's why he is also kinda unhappy that Tolkien's great-grandson Royd Tolkien played the role of a Gondorian warrior for the movies.

He said that PJ's films often didn't portray the thoughts of his dad properly and sometimes changed the mentality or athmosphere of the original book.

Christopher isn't like that, he just doesn't swallow everything criticless like a vacuum cleaner.

If your father already told you of his world as good-night-stories when you were a child
You grow up with them
You spend years working with all the manuscripts, trying to arrange them, commenting them all with acribic details on names and languages
You'd also really love the books, the characters, the whole environment, wouldn't you?
And you would be quite critical about others' interpretations of it
You'd be disappointed if this amazing and complex universe would suddenly mostly be connected to a certain naively grinning actor and screaming girls and pointless slaughter of faceless soldiers, the milleniums of history reduced to some prissy blond elves and glittery blue housies in trees?

Wouldn't you?

Money doesn't have to make people bad
At least he doesn't run around showing everybody how much he has
I like his way of dealing with the films - he isn't in the news, stays away from all the media stuff though he is most probably the person who knows most about the whole stuff, who has most to do with it

And those who really get the money aren't Christopher or his family or whatever
It's all the people working with the marketing and merchandising - the Tolkien Enterprises, Tolkien Estate, those who have the rights to produce the films.

He didn't whine about the films being all bad - he just criticized some things
Everybody should do that
Not look at it as being flawless just because it bears the name of the greatest mythology ever invented.
