They can do all sorts of stuff to improve the casts' appearances for the camera. They all look pretty ugly off stage. I would say though that in the films Elijah Wood is the best looking (no facial hair)

She looks more like a regular woman off screen though. On the second DVD of Fellowship of the Ring they showed how they made her up to make her skin look tauter and shinier and everything. You might be pleasantly surprised at the effect the Hollywood black arts could have on you.
