there is no indication to state how old he is, but if he is a living man than he's very longed lived for no man is immortal unless he were one of the dead King's subject or a wraith, but then that would contradict Tolkien's writing of the MOS...he may be of that race called the Black Numenorians...either a descendant of one of their kings or some high lord...

and yes, he is just a messenger not a captain or leader of an army...
