Originally posted by Victor Von DoomSurfing With an Alien is a guitar masterpiece. Unlike most solo guitarist, Satch doesn't really wank, he has great song structures and variation. I think a testament to his great songwriting is that so many of his students became famous for the stuff they would create. Skolnick (great metal and jazz and classical guitarist), the guy from Counting Crows, Hammett, Larry Lalonde (created death metal and is great at funk), Steve Vai (can be a wanker but can also write very structured songs ie. his Whitesnake era), etc. Flying In a Blue Dream and the Extremist are also excellent. Opinion I guess though.
Which part? (are you wrong about)

Yeah, it is.I do like the Surfing with the Alien album, but I didn't even notice it on the page. I was really referring to Not of This Earth, which I wasn't too keen on.
I've actually always preferred Vai.
Passion and Warfare is excellent, but I think that he is descending into wankery these days. Put, he definitely did great work with Zappa and Roth and Whitesnake.
