Kid's got me confused on this on this one, so I can't exactly say what I am feeling.
There wasn't anything funny about the movie. The only laughter I think this movie could produce would be nervous laughter, just because the more you get into the movie, mentally, the more and more realistic it comes across.
Not that such a family exists, knowing this movie is loosely based on real events, it's just Tobe Hooper's presentation of the situation and characters that seems like an average day gone wrong, just by making a "Wrong Turn". Pun intended.
It's just a bare bones, spooky horror movie that maintains a real sense of urgency and realism throughout the whole movie, and doesn't need special effects, scary backdrops, or creepy background music to heighten the mood.
As for the 2003 TCM, in comparison, it's a very dramatic, easy going, and simplsitic rehash of the original. There was no tension, as the kids were just conveniently picked off. It was fully of jump scares to make up for the lack of creepiness rooted in realism embodied by the original.
There is no redeeming qualities to the remake, IMO. Other than Jessica Biel showing that she really can act, and had "Scream Queen" movies not died out in the 80's, along with JLC's horror movie career, Biel would wear the crown with credibility.
