Mutants: The way they work

Started by Jury5 pages

I used to love this thread, so I'm bringing this up once more.

It's really nice to discuss stuff like how the powers of a certain mutant works... be sure to adhere into a convincing scientific theory while trying to explain a mutant power.

So, may I continue the discussion with Blink?

Her powers explain, thus:

She manifests spatial-shearing ability as teleportation portals or energy shafts focused on her javelins that displace objects upon contact, either teleporting them away or disrupting them on a molecular level.
This is quite difficult to explain, but why don't give a try? 🙂

aight heres my take on Iceman:

Bobby Drake could be, potentially, one of the most powerful mutants on
the planet. Look at his power. People say “Ooh! He makes ice.” Or
now, “Ooh, he can turn himself into ice!"

But let’s step back. Basic physics says that there is no such thing
as “cold”, as a quantative energy form. Only degrees of heat. “Cold” is
relative term, requiring a difference between the observerd target and
the temperature of the observer. Example: I’m standing in my office, at
a nice 73 degrees. The cabbie outside is standing on the street,
shivering in 40 degrees. To me, he is cold. Whereas if I were buried in
snow at around 20 degrees, I’d consider him pretty warm.

Right then, we’ve established that there is no such energy form
as “cold”. So, Bobby doesn’t generate cold to form ice, and he doesn’t
generate the moisture himself (imagine how quickly he’d be
dehydrated). Therefore, he forms his ice structures from the ambient
moisture in the enviroment around him. To do this he causes the
moisture to freeze.

But how? We know he doesn’t “project cold”, so then he must absorb or
dissipate the heat. By the laws of thermodynamics, energy is constant,
it cannot be created or destroyed. However, let’s go to another scientific
principle. Heat is a measurement of the internal kinetic energy of an
object. The more those atoms and molecules are buzzing around, the
hotter it is.

What Bobby Drake does, as I see it, is project a field that inhibits the
motion of those particles (herein referred to as Brownian Motion) thus
dropping the temperature and freezing the moisture.

However, the amount of water vapor in any given area is not consistent
with the large stunts he regularly pulls of ( Ice slides, ice walls, ect). If
he were to coalesce that much water vapor in one place and freeze it,
the humidity all along the Eastern Seaboard would drop dramatically,
we’d have wildcat lightning storms all over the place, cats and dogs
living together, it would be anarchy, you see my point.

So that extra frozen mass has to come from somewere. Remember
water vapor isn’t the only thing in the air. You have a mixture of all
sorts of gases. One of the most prominent of these is carbon dioxide.
Compared to the other prominent gases in our atmosphere
(nitrogen, the most common, and oxygen), carbon dioxide has a
relatively high temperature (although still incredibly low) at which it
becomes solid. It is my theory that the most part of Bobby’s ice
structures are composed of frozen carbon dioxide, or “dry
ice”. This would explain why Manhattan isn’t flooded everytime his ice
slides melt, since most of it sumblimes into gaseous carbon dioxide.

So, what Bobby does is inhibit the Brownian Motion of objects. He can
do this so quickly that there is no expansion of the target’s water
content, as was seen when he flash-froze Legion completely. Had he
merely frozen all the moisture in Legion’s body, well....put an
unopened can of soda in the freezer sometime. Wait a few days. Watch
the results. Legion would be a messy red chunck when he thawed.

Bobby is an incredibly powerful cryokinetic. But thats not the only extent
to his powers. Since Mikhail’s fiddling, he can transform his entire body
into a water-based organism. In his form of homogenous ice, his
thought processes go on, even though water is a MUCH less efficient
conducter than neurons in the himan brain. Basically, Bobby
converts all the molecules of his body into water, and freezes it and
molds it as he moves. He has the capability to assume a completely
liquid form (as Emma did when in control of his body) as well has the
ability to “teleport” by zapping his consciousness through water vapor in
the atmosphere, reforming at his desired location. In AoA, this was
referred to “moisture inversion”. He has also shown the ability
to “levitate” himself though he rarely uses this ability.

Through time and practice Bobby could one day realize his potiental.
Here are somethings that could do through realization and training:

Create a “giant” ice form with corresponding strength and stability
Create and animate multiple ice forms
Coalese all the water vapor in an area into a superdense solid, dropping
the humidity rapidly, resulting in chaotic weather effects, mass electrical
storms, ect
Inhibiting the moisture in other peoples bodies causing havok on them, or hitching a ride.

As well as many other stunts. In closing, Bobby is a rightful Omega
class powered mutant he just hasnt realized his full potiental as of yet.

BRAVO! 😖mart:

Thanks....anyone have anymore science to anymore mutants?? Iceman is the only one I have any REAL info on....

You should all be aware that there is a book called "The Science of the X-Men." I own it, and I can't say it's the most interesting read, but some characters' entries are kinda cool. Several potential answers for selected X-Men are in there.

Yeah that books explains in very good detail. There's different explanations though.I think that book has the best suited explanations though on how the X Men would work.

I've read that before.

You wrote it?

no didnt write found it somewhere, but I put it in an old thread a while back on Iceman

wow I just read what I wrote that made no sense...no I did not write it....I found it somewhere....anyways anymore mutants??

Yeah, I know... Blink's power is somewhat scientifically impossible, I guess.

How does Cannonball make himself a cannonball?

With regard to his tragic history, Cannonball has the ability to generate thermochemical energy in the form of a "blast field" which envelops his body.

Originally, Sam's power only worked by transforming him into a human rocket -- activating his power caused a rush of energy to cover his body and discharge from beneath his feet, rendering him nigh-invulnerable and providing propulsion that launched him through the air. The blast field protected Sam and anything or anyone he carried close to his body from harm. Through training, Sam learned how to turn and maneuver in midair and to dull down the roar of his rocket power, making him a little more stealthy. He also learned how to control the buildup and release of his energies, enabling him to release his thermochemical power without automatically taking off. Sam could generate his blast field as a protective force around his body while standing still, and could increase the radius large enough to accommodate at least a half-dozen other people as well. Cannonball learned other tricks as well, such as projecting bio-kinetic force blasts from his hands, added a rocket burst behind his fists to increase the force behind his punches, expanding his field outwards as he struck a target to generate a kinetic shock wave on impact, and even sending his power out as a stream of energy to surround an opponent at arms' length, trapping them within a containing blast field. Though his blast field normally disperses kinetic impact and force directed against it, Sam has learned how to hold onto kinetic energy that hits his field, and re-channel it as a part of his own thermochemical force. Using this trick he has been seen enhancing both the rocket-punch and kinetic shock wave abilities mentioned above.

The Sonic Scream

Banshee and Siryn have superhumanly enhanced vocal chords enabling them to scream louder and longer than a normal person is capable. They can also modulate the wavelength and frequency of their "sonic scream" to produce different effects (apparently, this ability is at least partially psionic and not done solely by the vocal chords).

A sonic scream can be directed as concussive force, and modulated to perform other effects like shatter glass, crumble masonry, and even liquefy solid objects if the effect is sustained long enough at an intense level. By psionically causing the force of a sonic scream to be directed behind them, Sean and Theresa are able to propel themselves through the air and fly. By projecting a scream that manipulates the fluids in someone's inner ear, they can induce unconsciousness, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, or vertigo in opponents.

Banshee has used his power to generate sonic waves and map out his surrounding environment, and used sonics to disrupt electronic scanning equipment to make it incapable of properly detecting his presence. In her first appearances, Siryn used her powers to generate a force bubble of energy around herself for protection, and to hypnotize Angel into carrying our her bidding and battle his fellow X-Men. Both of them possess superhuman hearing, allowing them to still hear properly even over the sound of their own screams, and specially reinforced eardrums that are immune to the harmful effects of loud noises and various ranges of sonic frequencies.

Teleportation and Nature

Nightcrawler has a number of unique physical traits, most of which he inherited from his parents, Azazel and Mystique. Kurt's entire body is covered with blue velvet fur. He has iridescent yellow eyes that increase his night vision, pointed ears, fangs, only two fingers and a thumb on each hand and only two toes on each foot plus a third digit which extends from the back of his heel. This third digit is highly dexterous and gives him opposable feet, allowing him to wrap them around and grab objects. He has a highly flexible spine which gives him peak human agility and acrobatic prowess. His prehensile tail is dexterous enough that he can hang from it on a trapezee or fence with it just as well as with his regular hands. Nightcrawler can stick to solid objects on contact, apparently through some natural suction ability concentrated onto his hands and feet, enabling him to cling to walls and scale vertical surfaces.

Hey, he also has mutant powers. Nightcrawler's body is constantly linked to an invisible wormhole-like effect, connecting him to the Brimstone Dimension. Normally, the only effect this wormhole has is absorbing the light from his immediate environment. As a result, Kurt's already-dark blue fur appears to be constantly cast in shadows. When he actually enters an area of shadow or subdued light, Kurt's body can appear to vanish entirely, becoming transparent and blending in with the darkness. When mentally triggered, the wormhole effect becomes active and transports him into the Brimstone Dimension. Nightcrawler then subconsciously travels a short distance within that realm before reappearing on Earth an instant later and some distance away. The transit through the Brimstone Dimension is completely intuitive and Kurt is not even aware of his time there. Both his entrances and exits are marked by a burst of flame, the stench of brimstone, and a sudden rushing of air which creates a BAMF noise. Nightcrawler's teleportation limits are defined by the direction he's travelling in, since the magnetic ley lines of our planet can affect his transits. By teleporting north-south (along the ley lines), Kurt can jaunt 3 miles at a time. Teleporting east-west (against the lines) enabling him to jaunt only 2 miles. A strictly vertical 'port straight up and down is the most difficult, and can only cover 1 mile of distance. Nimrod once scrambled Kurt's system electromagnetically, creating a constant disruptor effect which prevented Nightcrawler from 'porting more than once in a 24 hour period without risking incredible pain and the possibility of re-emerging inside a solid object. Ironically, months later, Doctor Doom attempted to perform the same attack on Nightcrawler not knowing it had already been done, and accidentally cured Kurt of his limitation.

oddly enough, and drunkly enough i'd actually like to try to figure out the why's and how's of blinks powers.

or frankly i'd just like to think really hard on any x-mans powers and how they could actually really work and what effects they would have on the person.. you know maybe that would be cool to put in, you know how telepaths have really bad headaches and their noses bleed sometimes when they use their powers way to much.. just things like that.. i get wierd when i get drunk.

That's what I really want, dude. But... that's too close to impossibility. 🙁

i just found that breaking the code game, and it's pretty cool although i'm pretty ****ing shocked it's taking people this long to figure it out man.
in a few minutes i figured out what took you explaining to those idiots who still don't get it, what just "some" of the riddle was. .

Actually... I hanged that thread up. Nobody has figured it out yet. 😊 I won't be posting the conclusion until somebody gets the Mystery Word. 😊

Here is a pretty cool Quicksilver explanation. It actually makes sense, which shocked me.

Quicksilver is a mutant who possesses the superhuman capacity to think and move at great speeds. His entire body is adapted towards the rigors of high-speed running. His cardiovascular and respiratory systems are many times more efficient than those of a normal human being. He metabolizes an estimated 95% of the caloric energy content of foodstuffs (normal human use is about 25%). The chemical processes of Quicksilver's musculature are so highly enhanced that his body does not generate fatigue poisons, the normal by-products of locomotion, which force the body to rest. Rather, his body constantly expels waste products during his accelerated respiration through exhalation. His joints are smoother and lubricated more efficiently than those of a normal human being. His tendons have the tensile strength of spring steel. His bones contain unknown materials significantly more durable than calcium to withstand the dynamic shocks of his feet touching the ground at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. Quicksilver's practical reaction time is about five times faster than a normal human's and the speed at which his brain processes information is heightened to a level commensurate with his bodily speed, enabling him to perceive his surroundings while traveling at high velocities. Quicksilver's lachrymose is more viscous than normal, thus preventing rapid evaporation and replenishment of surface fluids on his eyeballs under the influence of high wind velocity to occlude his vision.

Quicksilver has been timed at speeds of up to 175 miles per hour, approximately three times faster than the fastest land animal, the cheetah. He has sufficient energy reserves to enable him to run at this average speed for about four hours, whereupon he must reduce his speed, replenish his body's store of energy, or do both.

Quicksilver has used his powers of acceleration for various feats. He has plucked an arrow out of the air from a standing start, after the arrow left the bow and traveled a distance of about 20 feet. He has dodged machine gun fire, but presumably he was able to see the path of the bullets change as his assailant was attempting to track him with a burst. He has created cyclone-like gusts of wind, which are able to knock a man off his feet, by racing around in a ten-foot diameter circle. With a 500-foot approach to gain momentum, Quicksilver can run approximately 300 feet up the side of a surface with a 90-degree inclination (such as a building) before gravity overtakes him. With a 100-foot approach to gain momentum, he can run across a body of water for approximately 1000 feet before beginning to sink.

thats cool!! anyone else?

I have a mutant who I always thought was far fetched.
Colossus.
The Power to cover himself in organic metal.
Now there are two things in particular I'm wondering. How if he turns into Metal does his body still move like a normal human. He should become nothing more than a Metal Statue.
Plus even if he can move how does having metal muscles help you to lift more. The ability to lift something means your muscles pushing something in a direction. Metal would make the muscles able to take more strain on the individual muscle fibers but it wouldn't really help with the actual moving of items. He should be nothing more than than a tougher skinned normal human.

actually he turns his WHOLE body into metal...

Superhuman Powers: Colossus possesses the mutant ability to transform his entire body into solid, nigh-invulnerable, organic osmium steel. In this "armored" form, Colossus posses sufficient strength to lift over 100 tons. He can withstand the impact of a 5,000 ton speeding train, the ballistic penetration of a 110 millimeter Howitzer shell, and the explosive force of nearly 500 pounds of TNT. His eyes are sufficiently strong to resist the impact of a .45 calibur bullet at close range. He is highly resistant to heat and cold (being able to receive full-force blasts from The Human Torch and/or Ice Man without taking damage) and can survive temperature extremes from -320o Fahrenheit to approximately 9000o F. Being conductive, he is immune to electricity. Colossus's armored body cannot rust. Also Colossus doesn't need to eat and breath, but he still can't survive in the vacuum of space. Why not? As solid steel, Colossus would be utterly immune to explosive decompression and thus easily capable of surviving in a total vaccum. Also, it seems logical to suppose that in his steel form Colossus be utterly tireless as well, since the biological processes that contribute to fatigue would no longer be present.
