Dark City, The MAtrix, & I, Robot

I have recently discovered that the person that directed I,Robot also Directed Dark City. Dark city was a great movie that came out before The Matrix and had some major similarities with it. Some people claim that The Matrix copied of of DArk City. But it is strange for this director to make a movie about how the machines start to uprise and for the star role to go to Will Smith who could have played as Neo in the Matrix Trilogy. I would like to hear your comments about this...
